4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most ..., July 21, 2000
By Steven H Simon (Lansdale, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This is one of the most enjoyable movies I have seen in a very long time. I have given this video to many of my friends. Based on the life of Mordecai Richler, (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz) aka Joshua Shapiro , played by James Woods, tells the story of a man who makes choices in his life which lead to roads taken and not. It is also a story of family love and the truth about going home again.Alan Arkin is wonderful as "Joshua'a "father and Gabrielle Lazure is perfect as Joshua's wife . The screen play was written by Mordecai Richler. A truly rich movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Winner!, February 20, 2000
By Linda (Virginia) - See all my reviews
It has been years since I've seen a film I've enjoyed as much as this. Filled with mature humor (or immature depending upon your viewpoint) it abounds with warm, but quirky characters much like "Lost in Yonkers" but with an adult perspective. Stellar performances by Alan Arkin and James Woods, as well as the rest of the cast! I've ordered 3 copies to share with my closest family and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece by Mordecai Richler and, November 29, 2002
By K. Schappert (Montreal, Quebec) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ted Kotcheff. This great movie is based on the book by Mordecai Richler "Joshua then and now". The movie is both funny and serious at the same time. It is a satirical look at the life of Montreal born Jewish writer who married a rich gentile. Joshua had a rather interesting upbringing (his mother a stripper and his father a small time gangster) in the Jewish ghetto of Montreal. His travels take him to Europe where he meets his wife (the daughter of a rich Canadian senator). The collision of the two worlds makes for some humorous scenes.

The duo of Richler and Kotcheff are also responsible for the smash hit and award winning movie "The apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz".
