5.0 out of 5 stars Joshua's Muse by Fae Sutherland December 23, 2009
By Elisa
Format:Kindle Edition
In a previous book always by Fae Sutherland for Ellora's Cave, her main character was a boy whom second name could have been "Pollyanna", he was so naive and with a pink glasses perspective of the world that people avoided to wound him to not seeing him cry. One of the character of this story, Alex, is innocent and trusting like that one, but more than a Pollyanna story, this is a naughty version of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.

When Alex meets Joshua, he knows that the other boy, even if only 21 years old against his 18, is way more experienced, he also wonders, the first time he finds himself in his bed, how many other innocent boy has lost their virginity in that bed. Yes, since Alex, barely 18 years old and for the first time far from home (even if "far" are only 40 miles) is meeting his fate as soon as he steps out of the safe shelter of his home; he is an easy prey for hungry wolves, and the first to spot him is Joshua. Joshua is an art student who "catches" Alex with the excuse of him being his muse and his absolute need to paint him... strange that, when Alex agrees to come into his lair, all thoughts about paintings disappear and instead Joshua begins the "hard" task to debauch the virgin... Never once in all the book Alex really models for Joshua ;-) Oh, well, it's pretty clear that it's not a paint that Joshua wants from Alex.

But now don't think that Joshua is a bad guy who passes from virgin to virgin (also since it's not so easy to find one, and when you manage, it's a good idea to not let him escape...): Joshua is really gentle with Alex, and their only troubles are those little silly thing that always happen between young lovers: why hasn't he called me? should I go to look for him?

3.0 out of 5 stars Joshua's Muse July 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For the length of the story, I was hoping for a more complex story.

***SPOILERS after this point, you've been warned***

The story centers solely around two main characters and their sex life. We don't get to meet any other people other than a brief roommate sighting, and a quick view of a Christmas vacation with Alex's family. We don't get to know the family at all except for one person, who still managed to stay two-dimensional. A lot of things happened "off camera" that would have made the story more engaging if they'd been written out for us.

I also kept having to remind myself that the characters are only 18 and 21, so the obsessive "I love you forever and ever and I'll stalk you to prove my point" is age appropriate. It's still uncomfortable to read, and I wish there had been more introspection and restraint.

The steamy scenes are well written (I do like this author - Gladiator's Master is an all-time favorite), but I found myself skimming them, especially in the end when I was convinced they were going to get walked in on and I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. (They're home for Christmas, deeply in the closet, but keep having risky sex - begging to get walked in on...)

The coming-out is so anti-climactic it doesn't even happen "on camera". The whole build-up of the story and we didn't even get to see it. And then the story was over right after that. Blah.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great April 21, 2012

Enjoyable, nice little story with likable characters. Not probably the best m/m book I've read, but worth the money. The characters were a little too young to my taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joshua's Muse April 7, 2010
By M. Nix
Format:Kindle Edition
Attending college away from home was overwhelming for Alex Manetas. Being away from his family and friends was hard for him, but when he meets Joshua things really spiral out of control. Alex's attraction to Joshua forces him to face up to his attraction to the same sex.

Joshua was open about who he was and whom he loved. He wanted Alex from the moment they met, but as much as he was falling for Alex, Joshua knew the relationship would not survive if Alex remained in the closet.

Will Alex be able to show his family the true him and declare publicly his love for Joshua or will Alex's fear of losing his family cost him the love of his life?

Joshua's Muse is beautifully written and emotionally riveting. Joshua spins Alex's world right round, upside down and inside out. Alex allows himself to love and feel and live with Joshua, he accepts all that Joshua so freely gave to him, but he was too afraid to give back to Joshua equally. Joshua's Muse opens on an emotional high and then gives the back-story that led to the heartbreaking scene that opens the story. Joshua was definitely on a different level than Alex emotionally but it would have been easy for Alex to catch up if only he had more faith in his feelings and the love of those around him. Joshua's Muse is a wonderful story that any reader who loves angst, love and romance will really enjoy.

More About the Author

Fae Sutherland has always dreamed of being a published author, starting her writing career off at age 11 with a series of stories she charged her classmates a dollar to read. She has since progressed to more serious writing, though always keeping that dash of irreverence and fun (and a hell of a lot more heat!). Also, she charges just slightly more than a dollar now.

Fae is perhaps best known for her books co-written with fellow M/M romance aficionado, Marguerite Labbe. Together they are the award-winning, bestselling authors of over a dozen novels, novellas and short stories. Currently, Fae is focusing on solo work and has a multitude of upcoming books in the pipeline.

When Fae's not working on new stories to make her readers sweat, she loves website design, spending too much time on Twitter, and watching oodles of Food Network with her beloved life partner. If there's any time left over, it's spent snuggling the cat.
