I travel a lot and communication barrier is always a problem being a guest or tourist in a different country. This software allows me to communicate or interact without being connected to the internet

There was a lot of downloading with this app. First the initial download, then 132 MB download for an "update" specifically for my device it said. I have a Kindle Fire HD 7 inch. Next you'll have to download each and every language you want. They average to be in the 20 MBS range. Spanish (Spain) has the biggest file at 48.2 MB. Once you download everything you don't have to again plus you can use everything you download without connecting to the internet which is great if you are in a foreign country and need to use this app without internet connection.

The app is really useful. I downloaded the German one inside the app because I speak German already so I wanted to see how accurate it was. It's pretty great and the phrases are simple and easy, great for anyone who truly doesn't know the language. There are a lot of topics to choose from. I really like that you can hear how the word or phrase is supposed to be pronounced. There's basics from hello and starting a conversation to important things that you might need on a trip such as checking into a hotel and calling the police or visiting the hospital. I truly think you could get around in a foreign country just fine with this app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Babelfish? January 26, 2012

Travel Interpreter for the Kindle fire is just what I need for an upcoming trip to Spain. Not only does it provide translations of many useful phrases for tourists but it also has the phrases recorded with proper pronunciation and accent. I no longer have to mangle it because now a tap on the screen will play the phrase.

5.0 out of 5 stars great app for kindle fire April 6, 2012

no internet required, covers most needed words and phrases and speaks them in a dozen languages using native speakers. The search word or phrase function is great; type in the word you are looking for and your options appear. I started learning words in no time and could put together phrases not covered

4.0 out of 5 stars Works good but missing some things for the price March 2, 2013

Since I don't know any French, I bought this to learn enough to get around before spending 5 days in Paris. I needed an app that would work off-line, and this fit the bill. I like how it was organized, with categories for basics, hotels, transport, etc. The search feature also works well. I didn't give it 5 stars because some of the phrases are a bit long, and you can't play them one word at a time to learn them. For example "Does someone here speak English" is "Y a-t-il quelqu'un ici qui parale anglais?" And the person speaking the phrase in French says it so quickly that it is hard to follow. If it had the capability to touch one word at a time and hear just that word, it would be much easier to learn. I don't regret the purchase, but for the money, it could be better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but large files and not a translator January 31, 2014

I expected an "interpreter" program would let me type in a phrase in English and then translate it into the other language or let me type in a phrase in a foreign language and then translate it to English for me.

Actually, it is a multi-media book. .. and a large one, at that. Be aware that the app will immediately request a download of images that may be another 200 - 300 Mb. Then, each language you want to download will add another 2-30 Mb. So you may need to double-check your available storage on your device. Once all the downloads all complete, you end up with the ability to look up common phrases in each language. The app does a good job of playing correct pronunciations for each. The written translations are spelled correctly (for the ones I tested).

However, if I was traveling in a foreign country, it would be difficult to find everything I'd want to say very quickly unless I was VERY familiar with the locations of every phrase in the program. That is a lot to learn.

This seems more geared to someone studying a foreign language. You would be able to get a great opportunity to practice key phrases and in the process become familiar with the sounds of the language. For this purpose, I think it is an excellent app.
If you are looking for practice of a foreign language, I highly recommend this. If you plan to travel and use it to translate, it has some limitations. Overall, though, it is worth purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for your travel device January 21, 2013

I used this app on my Kindle Fire while traveling in Japan and South Korea. It does NOT require internet to operate, but in order to operate you need to download the languages you think you might need in your travels (which does require internet). I used hotel-room wifi (which isn't very fast) but still downloaded both languages in under 5 minutes to my Kindle. When I was out in Seoul or Tokyo I had all the downloaded phrases ready to use.

A reminder: this is a phrase guide. If you're looking for a robotic translator that speaks your order in a resturant you need to invent your own app. While traveling I reccomend you use these apps to commit a few phrases to memory; that's all you need. There are business phrases, introductory phrases, and transportation phrases. Be a good guest in a foreign nation and try to use these apps to learn a bit of the local tounge! Too often people get these apps expecting them to be able to TRANSLATE. This is a useful tool if you use it correctly.

I will continue to use this product wherever my next travels take me. The phrase-speaker voice has great pronunciation. I reccomend this for anyone who might find themselves somewhere they don't speak the language.
