Thank goodness my mother made me read it!,

This review is from: The Journal of James Edmond Pease: A Civil War Union Soldier, Virginia, 1863 (My Name is America) (Hardcover)
I'm a sixth grader, and I read this book over the summer. I highly recommend this book for history-lovers. I went to Gettysburg, PA, this Spring and it really got me into the Civil War. When my mother showed me the book, I couldn't pass it up. It's a great book with lots of true background. James Edmond Pease goes through lots of interesting things. I don't know how he did it. Some parts were so exciting I couldn't sit still!

Accurate depiction of a boy coming to age as a soldier,

This review is from: The Journal of James Edmond Pease: A Civil War Union Soldier, Virginia, 1863 (My Name is America) (Hardcover)
I have been a student of the Civil War and a reenactor for over a decade. I have read many journals and reports and have even "experienced" life on the march and in battle first hand. The Author does a superb job of capturing the camaraderie, petty jealousy and drudgery of camp life. Many of the camps scenes would be very familiar to any reenactor. He also vividly captures the excitement and devastation of battle without being overly gory or morose. His depiction of a scared young boy making his way back to camp from behind enemy lines was so exciting I couldn't put the book down. Underlying a vivid description of life during the Civil War is a charming story of a boy coming of age. By the final chapter, the boy who thought he was jinxed has realized what an important contributor to the war effort he really was. Though written for a child to enjoy, anyone with a love of history will find the time spent reading this delightful story well spent. My Dad gave me this thoroughly enjoyable book for Christmas. I would recommend it as a great gift for anyone wishing to develop or continue an interest in the Civil War.

I read this to my kids as part of our homeschool curriculum on the Civil War. It is fantastic! The narrative teaches a lot about life "back then", specifically about life for a soldier. James is not too fired up over the political issues of the Civil War (i.e. there's not a lot of intellectual political or humanitarian discourse), but for him, the decision to become a soldier was a personal one. His war experiences are personal too, and I feel his assessment of others and how to deal with social situations are applicable to my kids today: ideas about luck, how to handle social situations, what is important in friendships and in life, how you view yourself, what constitutes bravery and heroism and humility. His character is one that I feel exemplifies the American hero ideal. Yet very personable and feels realistic, not an unattainable superman-type hero. Just a really good guy. We got our copy of the book from the local library, but this is one I might buy because I will want to read it over and over again to the kids as they grow up. Not just for history, although it is great for that, but for maturity, character and goodness. Thanks for the book, and for letting us glimpse into these mens' lives, Mr. Murphy.

This is a great book. It is about this Union soldier who thinks he has bad luck and has to keep a journal for the company he is in. It is exiting. If you liked The Red Badge of Courage you will like this book.

A Very Interesting Read,

This review is from: The Journal of James Edmond Pease: A Civil War Union Soldier, Virginia, 1863 (My Name is America) (Hardcover)
"The Journal of James Edmond Pease" by Jim Murphy is about a 16-year-old Civil War Union soldier who is chosen to write an account of the war. In the beginning he seems to be a little whimpy. I liked this book, even though I am not interested in the Civil War. It was interesting becauseit is the direct point of view.

I Loved this book. It is great. All the Dear America books are great. At our school the books are always checked out, and when they do get some in people fight over them. I would say this is the best out of all of them. Although I think that there should be a sequal to this book about his second jurnal that would finish the war. It does tell you what happens to him after the war is over.

This review is from: The Journal of James Edmond Pease a Civil War Union Soldier (My Name is America) (Hardcover)
I purchased a new book from this site and paid 19.31. What I received after nearly 2 weeks from woodysbooks was a used for that the invoice said cost 8.98. I do feel this I have been wronged and expect for this to be corrected. I will never buy from this website, Barnes and Noble or Amazon for not making this right. I called everyone and everyone says call someone else. Who is responsible for fixing this? Everyone tells me someone else. I would not recommned buying on this website.
