Book Description

June 1974
Spanning some fifty-five years, John Wesley's voluminous Journal records the daily tribulations experienced in traveling the length and breadth of the British Isles in the 18th century. These selections present an engrossing portrait of Wesley during the course of his travels and evangelical activities, illuminating the preacher's views and opinions on a host of contemporary matters. Begun as a public vindication of his early spiritual and pastoral work in Oxford and America, Wesley's journal became a means of keeping far-flung outposts of Methodism in touch with one another, a device for administering encouragement and rebukes, and a textbook of the experiential religion Wesley spent his life proclaiming. Wesley's eclectic interests and passion for rational analysis also make the Journal a rich source for any reader interested in observing the conditions and values of Augustan society--particularly those of the lower classes--through the eyes of a well-educated and intelligent gentleman of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflections on a Man of Depth Who Made a Difference, June 24, 2004
By
Wesley was a passionate man, highly emotional. All you have to do is read the reflective writings in this book to see for yourself. At the same time, he was scholarly, analytical, logical. Wesley was deeply spiritual. In sum, he was multidimensional. Fortunately we get to share some of the difficulty he encountered as we read what he went through at various stages of his life.

He agonized over a woman, seeking God's will on the matter. Modern writers would call him a "hopeless romantic." He wrote, "My heart was with Miss Sophy all the time. I longed to see her, were it but for a moment."

Wesley's personal library must have been extensive because in his will, which is included in this book, there are numerous references to books. The man traveled extensively as one on a mission from God. Many lives were positively influenced by this man of God. His legacy remains in books such as this one. For that we can thank God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely Engrossing! Shockingly Honest & Utterly Real!, September 3, 2005
This review is from: Journal of John Wesley (Paperback)
John Wesley endured much opposition and persecution to his message of salvation and love through Jesus Christ. His journal reveals a very mortal but spiritual giant of a man. I love this book and will treasure it always. It is one of the best investments I ever made in a Christian or secular book! Beautiful and truly remarkable!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read, March 2, 2010
By
For those interested in reading the daily journals of an outstanding Christian minister and brilliant Christian theologian, these are the books.

Amazing honesty, daily activities, thoughts about a variety of topics etc. are in these pages. A lot of snippets about all kinds of things fill the pages.

John could be brutally honest in talking about himself and his dealings with others, but he could also not completely understand them (witness his dealings with women).

This is the best set of journals I have read, of course I am interested in John Wesley.
