well it looked good...,

short and somewhat predictable. also the high number of out of place sex scenes did nothing but drag out a predictable and dying story. pun intended.

I saw this in my Kindle recommendations and decided, for the price, I would try it. I sure was glad I did. Afte downloading the sample chapter, I needed to read on immediately. This book is the journal of a young woman named Donna. Who recounts "the event", so to speak, and her survival tactics and encounters afterwards. It's short read, but very eventful. I read this is a few hours, but don't hold that against it--it is a novella remember. I'm a lover of all things zombie and undead, and this book didn't disappoint. I got attached to Donna in what little time I spent with her, and truly wanted her to be ok. What happens to Donna? Does she survive? Find others? And if so, what is in store for her? I have to say the ending was pretty unexpected, I totally thought the writers were etching out another direction of the story. So I was surprised, but not in a bad way. Great, fast read when you want a first hand account of the zombie apocolypse and the aftermath. An afterthough--the Kindle has given me such great opportunities to discover lesser known, "indie" writers and for an amazingly low price! I will definitely be purchasing more book downloads like this.

So I love the genre, but really? Do yourselves a favor. Buy a kindle, and download the sample. It is the only way that you can avoid wasting your money. I took a chance and bought the full version when the sample was complete, but honestly it was more due to my apparent masochistic nature of wanting to see how bad it was going to get. The writing was actually all right, so I would possibly consider the author in the future, but the inclusion of sex in this tale was awkward at best. Definitely not a memorable read. Not necessarily the bottom of the genre barrel, but we could definitely spend our time better. However... if you are a true genre fan like myself, you really do have to read it just because of it's attempts at pushing the expectations from zombie novels. Pick it up if the price is right. Just don't expect anything amazing.

Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed Journal. If Frederic Brown were still alive and writing zombie apocalypse stories, this is the sort he would write.

"Journal" is an interesting look at the time shortly after the start of the "Zombie Apocalypse", as seen through the eyes of "Donna". While the story unfolds through the Journal entries made by one of the few survivors of the initial outbreak, this is not as detailed or involved as the excellent Day by Day Armageddon that shares a similar format.
No spoilers from me: Donna is an unlikely survivor of an event she really doesn't understand, but possess the good instincts, intelligence, and luck to hang on to life where so many others failed. Through the course of Donna's adventures it was easy to become attached to her and root for her success and cringe when she makes mistakes. Unlike most of of Zombie fiction I read, this one has a little bit of romance thrown in as well. This was an enjoyable read that falls slightly outside the mainstream of the genre. Recommended! CFH |
