5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource for Multimedia Storytelling and Journalism 2.0, March 10, 2010
This review is from: Journalism Next: A Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing (Paperback)
JournalismNext is a fantastic resource for multimedia reporting and is a must-read for novice and veteran journalists making the transition to Journalism 2.0 and beyond. It's also great for citizen journalists, PR and marketing pros looking to better understand how journalism is evolving.

Author Mark Briggs offers How-Tos for basics like RSS and blogging and provides much needed tutorials on Twitter, crowd-powered collaboration, going mobile and telling stories with photographs. He shares the steps required to tell stories with video, audio and explains what equipment might be best for your budget. And he offers tips on building audiences and managing conversations.

Most importantly, Mark provides a check list and a kick-in-the-pants to Get Going at the end of each chapter. JournalismNext should be required reading at journalism schools and newsrooms around the world. Thanks for a great book Mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for journalists and those interested in the future of reporting, September 12, 2010
This review is from: Journalism Next: A Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing (Paperback)
Great resource for college students or journalists who want to understand all of the opportunities in covering news on new digital platforms. A good blend of philosophical and practical ideas. It showcases good work and the steps you can take to enhance your reporting and your career. I've recommended it to a number of journalists and one university.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and useful information, July 27, 2010
This review is from: Journalism Next: A Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading "Journalism Next". The information is organized so that it flows. You can read the text in order or based on the chapters that you are most interested in reading. I enjoyed the 'Tech Innovators' sections: industry professionals and their thoughts on how things operate at the media outlets where they work.

The language of the book is straight-forward. There are lots of images to compliment the topics. The book is just a wealth of resources.

I won't be able to use it solely for a text for the courses that I teach, but I will be referencing one chapter for one of my courses.

Oh, and Briggs recognizes that the text might be outdated in what, two years, and he often references that you should search online for updated information.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Journalism Next: A Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing (Paperback)
When looking for a book I always go to Amazon.com. Not only can I find the book but always a good price. This purchase was made for my daughter who is attending college and after attending her first class she was informed that she needed the book immediately. As always Amazon came through and she received the book before her next assignment was due and was able to complete the assignment.

Always tried and true for me.

Thanks for your continuing assistance.

I was a journalism student in the early 1970's. I have been working with computers since 1972. I have been on the Internet since the very early 1990's. I currently teach computers courses at a local college. I write technology columns for magazines, and I review technology and software books for O'Reilly Publishing. I have been blogging since 2005. However, I must say, that this is the most precise book on how to be in tune with today's journalist culture I have ever come across. After reading this book you will not wonder why this book is so widely used in colleges throughout North America.

Briggs states at the onset that "Journalism is about people, not technology." In this book you will learn the inner secrets of how to connect with your readers. You will see how this connection spreads to more and then more readers. Of course you will learn the why and the how that technology is involved so deeply in today's journalist's work. You will learn how technology and the Internet are utilized in a career in Journalism.

Briggs covers all the bases, from the importance of advanced and micro blogging, making audio reporting visual, to the techie equipment you will need for the job. In this book he teaches how to "build an audience"; how to maintain that audience. Briggs demonstrates details of why setting up a Facebook or Twitter account is a must.

The book is filled with references and articles by several top bloggers and online editors. Many innovative companies open yet other doors to peek in and learn more interesting tips and tricks. The contents of this book cover every aspect of journalism today, information that would take years of experience and study to learn otherwise.

If you are at all interested in writing or becoming a journalist, especially writing for an online publication, or even if you are a seasoned journalist and need to get up to speed with what is out there today, this book is a necessity. Don't forget to purchase a yellow highlighter for this read due to the many topic points where you will find yourself saying, "I didn't know that".

Had to buy this for journalism class and it arrived way before the seller said I was going to get it. Gave me enough time to read this bad boy before class.
