This review is from: The Journals of Denton Welch (Paperback)
I came to Denton Welch via Alan Bennett, who mentions him in various of his memoirs. My copy of the journals is a faded paperback purched via an Amazon associate; it's not notable for its proof-reading, but that's hardly the point. Welch's vivid account of life as a gay man in 1940s England, as well as of everyday living in the war period, is absolutely riveting. I heartily recommend this book to anyone seeking a beautifully observed and extremely specific view of life at that time -- things which, try as film-makers will to recreate them, are essentially lost to history save through first person accounts of this sort. And since Welch could not 'take part' in the war, his take on life at the time necessarily has a quotidian focus which I found extraordinary. His accounts of his encounters with Edit and Sacheverell Sitwell are alone worth the price of admission.
