5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful movie
The Journey of August King is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. The Journey of August King is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. August King finally has the deed to his land and home and while he is traveling back to his home he comes across a runaway slave. The goodness in August allows him to help her. He sacrifices everything for this slave and he never asked for anything in return. The scenery in the movie is overwhelming. It's beauty is at times undescribable. There's not much dialogue in this movie but when you reach the end you're like wow, that was a great movie. I've watched this movie many times and I am still awed by it. If your looking for a truly heartwarming story this is the one. I highly recommend this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent movie, March 3, 2001
By A Customer
A moving portrayal of the conflicts surrounding slavery. It was refreshing to see the spectrum of human attitudes and emotions concerning this especially among the mountain people (black and white) of NC. The characters were warm and believable and the story flowed along well.

5.0 out of 5 stars NC Mountain Movie, January 11, 2001

sharon dickerson (In beautiful North Carolina) - See all my reviews
I loved this movie! It is appropriate for all ages to watch with the exception of one quick scene.Of course the subject matter and depth would pass over a young child's head! It is a quiet quality movie about the growth of a man's character or maybe the revealing of the strength of character that was already there! There are few characters in the movie so you can quickly form an emotional bond with or against each one! And the movie takes place in the beautiful NC mountains during another time in history! And the music is great too! I don't want to tell you about the movie just watch it and see if you don't think it's wonderful too!

5.0 out of 5 stars move over Halle Berry, February 6, 2003
By
newton lee "louis" "chi-town frenchman" (Hometown, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
after recently seeing "The Truth About Charlie", I was captivated by a great actress-Thandie Newton. Iwent online to find more of her films and after reading reviews purchased this film. I watched it 5 times the first week. what a phenomenal film about humanity and redemption. jason patric is out standing as a farmer driven by his conscience to help a runaway slave girl. larry drake is so real as the evil slave master, but it's thandie newton who steals the movie becoming so believable as the desperate slave girl. she's an incredible actress, far superior to any out there. i've never seen such chemistry between inter-racial couples in film as mr. patric and miss newton. the reviewerwriting this is of white descent and consider myself very impartial.giving credit to great actresses such as hepburn, fonda, streep, hayward etc. i've never seen an actress get more into character than Thandie Newton.Move over Halle Berry and every actress in film, Thandie Newton holds her own and is a true talent. see her in "Flirting"' "Truth About Charly", "M.I.-2" and see a great talent who is much under-rated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Powerful Film, December 2, 2004
This review is from: The Journey of August King (DVD)
This is one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen. I would give it a 10 out of 10. Incredible. It is an uplifting film about the potential of the human spirit. This film teaches what will really heal the wounded hearts of our nations prejudice against one another, which is having love towards one another. A very moving and inspiring movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING, May 18, 2000

Anyone wanting wild action would miss the the poignantly quiet message of courage and triumph of this film.

Patric had the good sense not to over-act his part portraying the gentle strength it took to risk giving human kindness at a time when doing so could threaten everything he had.

Filmed in country as timelessly beautiful as its message, I was inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Hero, June 24, 2000
By A Customer
I have seen few movies that have so clearly demonstrated a hero of such a true heart. The reluctant August King makes incredible sacrifices in his journey from being a lonely man to becoming, as another character calls him, a "prophet."

Not much happens in this movie. Nobody says very much. There's not much action. There's not much suspense. No special effects. But you get to the end and say "that was a great movie."

Have bought at least a dozen dvds of this movies to share. A wonderful story about growth and goodness. An excellent movie for teenagers too. It may not have won any Oscars but this is a movie you won't regret purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last word, April 6, 2000

I really enjoyed this movie for the simple fact

that it had a deep meaning to it. My favotire

part in the movie was when the slave girl

approached August at night to ask for some

food, and he helped her. I also liked the end

after all of the running from her slave master

she finally reached her goal which was freedom.

This was one of my favorite movies and I hope

that it gets re-released. If it were up to me I

would give the movie actors an Oscar Award.
