Editorial Reviews

Once heard, never forgotten! Loreena McKennitt's music offers a cultural richness rarely heard in contemporary popular music featuring a rare range of instruments and textures that speak to the musical traditions of five continents. THE JOURNEY SO FAR - THE BEST OF LOREENA MCKENNITT traces the highlights of her career spanning 30 years to-date, 8 studio albums, 2 Grammy nominations, multi-platinum record sales and a once in a lifetime journey in the footsteps of the Celts.

This 2 CD set features 12 of McKennitt's most treasured songs -- among others, the top ten single 'The Mummers' Dance' (from THE BOOK OF SECRETS), 'Lady of Shalott' (from THE VISIT), 'Bonny Portmore' (From THE VISIT and heard in the movie HIGHLANDER) and 'The Mystic's Dream' (from THE MASK AND MIRROR and as heard in the mini-series THE MISTS OF AVALON). The second disc is a 55 minute BONUS audio disc that contains NEVER BEFORE RELEASED highlights from 2012's A Midsummer Night's Tour of Europe which was recorded in Mainz, Germany.

This retrospective of the Journey So Far is simply that, musical snapshots of a journey yet to complete itself and perhaps it never will.

I love Loreena's music and have several of her CD's. Even so, I was glad to see a "best of" released. My big issue is why all of the edited songs? There are more edits than indicated and we're not talking about a few seconds, some are several minutes. Why??? The CD has more space than was used. The songs should have been full versions or more songs should have been included. The only person I would recommend this CD to is someone who have none of her CD's.

First off let me start by saying that I have all of Loreena's recordings, and had the greatest privilege of meeting her this past summer at a concert in Canada. It was an amazing night I won't soon forget. She puts on a fantastic performance with high energy and great passion. Her love of the music she performs is evident in the entire show. Her music will touch your heart and wake you up to a whole new world.

This particular collection takes a bit from all of her recordings, giving you a nice variety. Her love of her humble beginnings is shown in the Irish selections. Her many journeys of personal and musical exploration are also represented here. It is a great pulling together of everything that I love so much about her music. I am thrilled to own this 2 cd deluxe set, and hope to have it signed someday, if I should be fortunate enough to meet Ms. McKennitt again.

If you have yet to get to experience the magic of Loreena’s music, then I think this would be great place for you to start. Open yourself up to the charm and mystery of the past through the passionate music of Loreena McKennitt.

This compilation celebrates Loreena McKennitt's 30th year in the music business. During this time, she has released 7 studio albums, 2 seasonal albums, 2 themed compilations, 3 live albums, 1 concert DVD, and 2 music documentaries. Loreena is also an accomplished business woman with all releases stemming from her own record label, Quinlan Road. Her voice is something you will not forget, and the music is fused with worldly instruments, beautiful melodies, and rhythm. Loreena's muse is her travels -- her lyrics are often times derived from ancient tales, cultural traditions, and poetry. In broad terms, her music bounces between two styles: Irish/Celtic and Mediterranean/Arabic.

While long-time fans may argue that Loreena has gotten in the habit of re-packaging her work, this compilation marks her first "greatest hits." For disc one, Loreena has done a good job selecting songs that showcase her musical diversity -- A few tracks have been edited for length but still preserves its impact. I should also point out that the songs are not sequenced from oldest to newest so you will get a mixed palette of style and production. The second "live disc" is an extension of her greatest hits that highlights her recent live tour. The packaging was minimal, which surprised me a little since it was a career retrospective.

For newcomers, I recommend this compilation as a stepping stool into Loreena's music. However, you could pick any of her previous studio albums and would be fine -- since there were notable omissions from this compilation. I started with 1997's "Book of Secrets" and 1989's "Parallel Dreams" remains my favorite album.

For fans who already own her discography, I am sure you will want to add this to your collection but may hesitate slightly.

I consider Loreena McKennitt a once-in-a-lifetime musical genius, and I literally listen to her music every day. I have been for over fifteen years, ever since I heard "The Mummer's Dance" back in '98.

Her "greatest hits" compilation "The Journey So Far," I think is intended as something for old fans and something to draw in new fans. Other reviewers have noted the edited versions of the songs on Disc One, and they bothered me at first too, until it occurred to me that longtime fans already have copies of those songs, and someone who is new to Loreena's music may be a bit intimidated by a twelve-minute version of the "The Lady of Shalott," (even though it is one of the most sublime compositions of the last thirty years.) So if you are new to Loreena McKennitt, do pick up this album and think of the first CD as a gateway to the ethereal wonders of her full-length albums.

Disc Two, which is of live performances, is the disc for the longtime fans and this is really where Loreena shines. She has a well-earned reputation as a stellar live performer. She includes new arrangements of some of her classic tunes, including "The Star of the County Down" and (a real standout) "As I Roved Out." Her fans have been waiting on a live recording of that one ever since "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" came out back in 2010, and it's wonderful.

Like every Greatest Hits album, this one is missing some signature songs. "She Moved Through the Fair," "Cymbeline," and "Never-ending Road" are to me the most glaring omissions, but I'm sure other people may miss other songs. With an album artist like Loreena, it would be difficult to please everyone, so this is a minor quibble.
