Excellent graphic rendition of a bad story,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Journey to the Center of the Earth (Graphic Revolve) (Paperback)
Of all the stories by Jules Verne, I like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" the least. The problem is the preposterous nature of a giant sea, prehistoric creatures and most absurdly light miles within the earth. At the time the novel was written, it was already known that the temperature was very high inside the earth and Verne admits that when they obtain water from an underground stream. Yet, the water in the underground ocean is cool enough to support ordinary marine life. This book is a graphic novel version of the story, complete with the violent storm and their expulsion out of an erupting volcano. Given what the writers and artists had to work with, they did an excellent job; they follow the story very well. The images capture the action as depicted by Verne, it reminded me of a classics illustrated comic book that I had when I was young. The problem is that the story is just so implausible for anyone with any knowledge of geology, science fiction requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief, however in this case that is too much to ask of the intelligent reader.

This review is from: Journey to the Center of the Earth (Graphic Revolve) (Paperback)
I bought this graphic novel for my six-year-old son. He loves how they go into the earth and find awesome things (his words). It seems reasonably close to the original, although some of the minor character's names have been changed. He rereads it constantly, so a good buy.
