Book Description

March 2005
For more than one hundred years, Madison Street United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Tennessee, has been part of the fabric of its members’ lives, and indeed, of the life of its community. It witnessed births, baptisms, marriages, and funerals. It experienced physical expansion, leadership changes, membership growth, and societal shifts. It seemed a permanent fixture, one that nothing could impact.

On January 22, 1999, church leaders and members were stunned to discover than an early morning tornado had leveled Madison Street’s historic church building. But the tornado couldn’t destroy the true heart and core of the church. With determination and optimism, the Madison Street church family continued to worship and act as a community . . . and began to rebuild.

A Journey of Faith is the story of that church. Rich with members’ memories, stories of historic Clarksville, and descriptions of church life, this powerful account seeks to preserve in one place and for all members past, present, and future a comprehensive chronicle of the first one hundred years of Madison Street United Methodist Church.

About the Author

Linda B. Rudolph has been a member of Madison Street United Methodist Church since early childhood. Like other members, she cherishes its rich history and beauty, and mourned the loss of the church structure and records in the tornado of 1999. Four years later, during a memorial service for former pastor Reverend Philip Ritter, she realized that the heritage and stories of the church needed to be preserved in a printed history.

Rudolph is the co-author of Counseling Children, a textbook now in its sixth edition, and has contributed to other books and publications. She holds bachelor and master degrees in psychology from Austin Peay State University, and earned a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She has also completed post-doctoral studies in leadership at the Peabody School at Vanderbilt University.

Linda and her husband William live in Clarksville and are the parents of three sons.
