5.0 out of 5 stars A great follow-up to The Capture
In the second book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, the story of Soren and the gang continues. I had been waiting since the release of The Capture to find out what happens; The Journey does not disappoint. The band of owls leave St. Aggie's behind to find new adventures, and encounters scores of new creatures. Once again, the author introduces us to fascinating...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little slow but KEEP WITH THE SERIES. The next 4 are fantastic
I have read all 14 of them (most twice!) and think this is probably one of the four slowest in the series. I will not spoil anything(a good review shouldn't spoil the ending -..-) but I will say that this is a book that is simply a setter-upper and a filler. Some things happen, and it is fairly interesting, but pales in comparison to the rest of the series and other...

Once again, the author introduces us to fascinating species of owls and other birds. The descriptions of flying are terrific--you can almost feel the wind in your hair. Now, if only the next book in the series will come out sooner...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best sequel ever, November 18, 2003
A Kid's Review
I decided to read The Journey because I read the prequel, The Capture. I like this book because it really shows how the owls interact. It's like the owls are real people that talk, walk, and have fun with each other. There are no people in this book. Just owls, snakes, and other birds, but it's really just an owl book. This second book still has Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, and a lot of other new characters. They make friends, and learn a lot of new skills at the Great Ga'Hoole tree.
At the end of The Capture, the four owls are a band to never split up and make it their quest to find the Great Ga'Hoole tree. Their journey to find the tree is exciting. About ¼ way into the book, the king and queen of Hoole find them, and lead them to the tree. When the four owls reach the tree, they learn about different chaws, which are different groups that you are selected into to preform certain deeds to help the world. Even Mrs. P, the blind snake, was back to doing what she longed to do, being a nest maid snake. The four owls soon find out that it's almost guarenteed that they won't be selected for the same chaw. While Soren is living his liufe at the Great Ga'Hoole tree, his thoughts of his sister, Eglantine, worry him. Was she captured by St. Aggies? Is she all right?
I truly recommend this book to anyone who has read The Capture. If you haven't read The Journey, but read The Capture, your mind must be going crazy to read the second book. It's really that good. It takes off exactly where The Capture ended. If you haven't read the first book in a little while, don't worry. The Journey reviews a lot. It's your choice. Do you want to find out about Eglantine? What's life like at the Great Ga'Hoole tree? Read The Journey, by Kathryn Lasky to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop reading this series, January 12, 2004
A Kid's Review
I liked this book because it was very interesting and had a great plot. What made this story terrific were the characters. Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger were amazing. They fight of enemies rescue owlets and everything else owls do. The four main characters really made this story awesome. My favorite part of the book is when Soren flies into a forest fire to retrieve coals for the great Ga'hoole tree. That's just one of the great parts. I can't wait to read the third book of this series.

This book is about a band of owls that are sent out to find the great Ga'hoole tree because they lost their families. At the Ga'hoole tree owls go out each night to perform noble deeds. When they arrive they are given their own hollow. Soon they will be put into chaws. A chaw is a group of owls who perform noble deeds like the search and rescue chaw. A weird thing happens to this search and rescue chaw, injured owlets start popping out of nowhere. They happen to come upon a strange owl that looks just like Soren. The owl is Soren's sister, Eglantine. When that is done one of the owls is missing, Ezylryb, Soren teacher wasn't there. Soren and his sister are sent out to find him.

People who like adventure and a little fantasy should read this book for sure.Teenager should also read this book because there are some hard words.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully and sensitively written book., July 1, 2004
By
KidsReads (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
As they travel towards the Island of Hoole and the mythic Great Ga'Hoole Tree, Soren the barn owl and his traveling companions discover that there are many wondrous places in the lands of the Southern Kingdoms. They encounter a number of obstacles, which they face together as a band. Each member of the band contributes something and has some degree of strength that comes to the fore in times of trouble or stress.

After many adventures and frightening experiences, the young owls at last find the island that rests in the Sea of Hoolemere. They also learn that the Ga'Hoole tree is no myth. It exists and is even more remarkable in reality than any tale made it out to be. Soon, Soren and his friends are part of the extraordinary community of owls that live within the tree.

In this beautifully and sensitively written book, Kathryn Lasky has continued to build on the world she created in Book One, where owls are a very elite group of birds, proud and separate from the other animals. In no time, the reader is caught up in a story where both dreadful and wonderful things happen. As Soren struggles to understand his new environment, he slowly begins to learn that there is more to life than just what he sees, hears and touches. Soren's realization about his own abilities is an exceptionally strong and powerful element in THE JOURNEY. There is also the discovery by the owls that live in the Great Ga'Hoole Tree that something truly dreadful is happening to the baby owls in the Southern Kingdoms. We are left hanging, wanting to know what this evil is, and at the same time fearing for the welfare of these owls.

Because the owls possess both strengths and weaknesses, readers will have no problems identifying with, and growing fond of, the characters that Kathryn Lasky has created.

I have read all 14 of them (most twice!) and think this is probably one of the four slowest in the series. I will not spoil anything(a good review shouldn't spoil the ending -..-) but I will say that this is a book that is simply a setter-upper and a filler. Some things happen, and it is fairly interesting, but pales in comparison to the rest of the series and other action packed books. However, don't let this stop you. If I were you, I would buy that 14pack that is the last one left, because this is the kind of book that is the "darkest befor the not-quite-so-far-off dawn" kind of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Review, April 12, 2005
A Kid's Review
In this funny and sometimes sad tale four owls take a long journey to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. On there way something bad happens. However, the four owls travel on to the tree.

the four are gtreeted by Borron and Baran, the king and queen of Ga'Hoole. The four owls are welcomed and they rest on the tree. Later, they divide into chaws or classes. One day, something mysterirous happens and owls are being found and brought to the tree.

Amoungst the many owls coming to the tree Soren, the main character or owl I should really say, recognizes his long lost sister, Eglantine. However, just like the other owls something is wrong with her, she will not speak properly. What will happen? Only you can find out by reading this book!

Ok so in this book the main characters (Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger) journey to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. Along the way they meet a Barred Owl who.... well i'll let you read what the Barred Owl said. So they finally make it to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. There they learn many things that most owls never learn. Like how to read and do math and they also learn special skills that are vital to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree and all the owl kingdoms. So they are put into chaws or special groups where they learn a type of skill. There are weather interpretation, getting coals from a forest fire, navigation, study of the tree, and many more. Then, Soren is again united with his sister Eglantine. Then at the end Soren's chaw ryb (or teacher) disappears.Read to find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
