A Travelers Bible!,
By JBC "rockridge" (Greenwich, CT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest (Paperback)
My wife and I plannned a trip to the Four Corners area and at the last moment received Journey to the High Southwest as a gift. We read it during the plane ride and made immediate adjustments to our travel schedule. The results were so good that we continued, chapter by chapter, to use Mr. Casey's guidance and suggestions. For those uninitiated in the region, or even experienced Four Corners visitors, we strongly suggest this guide. It will provide very accurate and useful information to anyone who uses it. Read the entire book - before you go!

Comprehensive overview of the four corners region,
By Rod Kranzler (South Dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest: A Traveller's Guide (5th ed) (Paperback)
This is a great travel book, providing quick and easy to reference to the lay-of-the land in the four-corners region in the style of a virtual tour of the area. The author takes you along his journey, showing you what to see and do, how to get there, where to eat, sleep, shop--or simply soak up the sublime beauty.

Probably the best travel guide for the high southwest.,

This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest: A Traveller's Guide (5th ed) (Paperback)
This is probably the best travel guide to the High Southwest in existence. Not overburdoned with factual data like most travel guides, this book provides plenty of vital information about food, lodging, shopping etc, while providing fascinating first-person narratives of experiencing the southwest, as well as background information such as geological and historical information that bring enrichment to anyone's travel experience. As an experienced traveler to the High Southwest who could perhaps write my own book on the subject, this book is both my constant reference and fun reading whenever I visit the area.

A great guide for the Four Corners region,

This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest: A Traveller's Guide (5th ed) (Paperback)
This is a fantastic guide to various places in the Four Corners area. I appreciate its detailed descriptions and actual opinions of the author, which sets it apart from many guidebooks. He also describes a lot of history of the region. All of these things, along with the author's writing style, make this a book I like to read even when I'm not planning or on a trip. We used this book (in its previous edition) along with Sandra Hinchman's "Hiking the SouthWest's Canyon Country" for a 9-day trip to Bryce/Capitol Reef/North Rim of the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago. Between these two books, we not only figured out what we wanted to see, but also where to camp/stay and hike (the latter from Hinchman's book mostly). We've also used this guide when visiting Mesa Verde and most recently for a trip to Santa Fe and environs last month. I do highly recommend it!

Very personal guide, not comprehensive enough,
By Lost Asia "lostasia" (San Luis Obispo, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest, 7th: A Traveler's Guide to Santa Fe and the Four Corners of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah (Paperback)
I usually enjoy independently published guidebooks that strike out on their own path. But this guidebook is lacking in comprehensive details about the regions it covers. Too much space is devoted to the author's long-winded, subjective narratives about his own personal journeys on these trails and in these parklands. Not enough details are given about the breadth of activities available outdoors in this region.
If you are looking for a guidebook with quirky anecdotal narratives, then buy this one. If you want a more comprehensive look at the Southwest with more helpful practical details for travelers, look elsewhere.

Excellent in every way,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey to the High Southwest, 7th: A Traveler's Guide to Santa Fe and the Four Corners of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah (Paperback)
This is a serious guidebook for travellers who take their touring and sightseeing seriously. It covers the Four Corners region of the southwest (UT, CO, NM, AZ) and is divided into four geographic sections. It includes information on the history of each section (in detail), points of interest (fully described), and where to stay/eat (fully annotated). Chapters focus on the canyon country of Utah, the Indian country of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, and the Rio Grande country. There are also a full index and a substantial bibliography. It's everything you could ask for in a guidebook and should be taken along by anyone travelling in this region. Highly recommended.
