If you are looking for 'how it is done', this recording is for you. Mr. Gets is an excellent actor who brings his artistry to music...and how!
Mark Hummel's arrangement of "It's A Fine Life" from OLIVER! is a particular treat as is "Wait" from SWEENEY TODD.
Other gems; "Long Before I Knew You" & "Shall We Dance"

5 star recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Wait, September 29, 2009
This review is from: The Journey Home (Audio CD)
Malcolm Gets fans have been waiting for a Malcolm Gets solo album for years! While we waited, we satisfied ourselves with various cast recordings and compilations (It is amazing that my CD of "A New Brain" still plays, as much use as it has gotten!) But finally, practically at the same time that the best cast recording featuring Malcolm Gets ever released was made available (The Story of My Life, Music & Lyrics by Neil Bartram and Book by Brian Hill, featuring Malcolm Gets and Will Chase.) the long-awaited solo album came out, and it was worth the wait!
There is not a weak track on the recording. While some of the songs are standards that feature Malcolm's classic sound ("Look To The Rainbow", "Shall We Dance"), others are romantic ballads that, I'll admit it, make me swoon a bit ("You Are Beautiful", "Long Before I Knew You"). Still others are fun numbers that show the performer's wide range ("Huggin' and Chalkin'", "Everything I've Got") and some highlight the actor with the fabulous voice, instead of the singer ("Anytime", "Wait").
If you are a Malcolm Gets fan, well...it's a no-brainer. But even if you haven't discovered Malcolm yet, check out this album and discover a new favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just listen to the first two tracks..., December 12, 2010

... and you will be hooked. Malcolm Gets version of Shall We Dance is so unexpected, and yet brings a whole new quality to this standard. Malcolm gets it, pun intended. This CD is one of the new tops for me on my journey through Broadway singers who wow me with what they do when they create their own works. This Gets CD should be on everyone's list to Get.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Broadway Voice - Gets gets it!, January 26, 2010

Malcom Gets premier album is a great one that demostrates what he can do with a song. Mostly a broadway album that opens with a great version of Look to the Rainbow Gets gets it. His version of Shall We Dance from the King and I is the best version of that song since Debroah Kerr did it in the Movie, but Gets slows the tempo to make it his. Wait from Sweeny Todd is another gem he excels at. My favorite on the CD is Everything I Got the toungue and cheek Rogers and Hart song from Jupiter. The Irving Berlin medley from Call Me Madam is great he and Melissa Enrico are a great team. The choice of material is great like Mandy Patakin would do. Wonderful CD to add to any collection. Kudos to Gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets Gets It, January 17, 2010

I only know Malcolm Gets from a few show albums and the Barbara Cook Sondheim CD. I am most pleased by his first solo album. He has picked some wonderful tunes and does justice to all of them.

Look to the Rainbow, It's A Fine Life and Long Before I Knew You are highlights for me. All are fine songs from big Broadway shows. And his take on them makes them sound fresh and new, although all three have been around for many years. Shall We Dance and You Are Beautiful are two more that he breathes new life into. Every cut on the CD is well done. Getting Tall from Nine is rarely done. His rendition is perfection. And Wait from Sweeney Todd is another top notch reading.

I am extremely impressed with the man and his music. I look forward to another solo album.

Highly recommended!

I've seen Malcolm Gets in a lot of shows on stage so I was pleased he finally made a solo CD. The song selection is wonderful and he gives a fresh take on every song. Gets has some vocal limitations but he puts so much emotion in his singing he overcomes that.
I love the last two tracks, The Journey Home and Long Before I Knew You, which has to be one of the most romantic songs ever written. You won't be disappointed if you buy this CD.

I've enjoyed Gets on several show albums, and his appearance with Barbara Cook in her "Mostly Sondheim" concert. Nice for him to have a solo outing. (But I must say I'm unhappy with Amazon's switch to soft packaging for mailing CD's. Although the CD arrived just fine, the jewel box was broken, which I simply loathe).
