5.0 out of 5 stars Journey of Hope, December 30, 2004
This review is from: Journey of Hope: Two Novels (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read Lurlene McDaniel before, and these two novels were no different from the three great ones in the Angels Trilogy which I highly recommend. The first novel of this joint book is Angel of Mercy. It involves Heather Barlow journeying to Africa on a hospital mercy ship following her graduation as a way to discover her idealistic dreams. She has been inspired by her parents' stories of their experiences in the Peace Corps. Once aboard, she meets Ian and is instantly attracted to him. In Africa, she learns much abtou herself and often the harsh realities she never expected to encounter. After an unexpected tragedy, Heather bravely risks herself for a resuce mission of a young orphan's sister in a war-torn area. Through her bravery, she leaves Africa extremely well-liked. But once she returns home, she feels like no one has chnaged but herself, her attempts at explaining her new philosophy to her friends, parents, and self-centered sister Amber unheard. Through much difficulty, Heather convinces her plastic surgeon mother to accompany her back to Africa with her friend Boyce to perform a desperately needed operation on the baby she rescued just months before. But an unexpected turn of events leave Amber somehow makign the journey. In Africa she has her own adventures and learns a great deal about herself and her goals, largely in part to her romantic interest Boyce. Tragedy once again strikes the Barlow family, and Amber and her mother are yanked home in fright. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Ever Read, April 23, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Journey of Hope: Two Novels (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read many books but I have to say this my absolute favorite, including the 23 other Lurlene McDaniel books I've read. I couldn't put it down! It was very inspirational. My friends(who also read the book) and I plan on going on a mission trip after we finish school, but the thought would probably never have crossed our minds without first reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A moving story, April 28, 2005

This review is from: Journey of Hope: Two Novels (Mass Market Paperback)
When I first brought this book, I berely had time to read it with all the work I had to do, once I had free time I began to read it and I just couldn't put it down. I thought this is very inspirational and the ending was so touching because you got to know these characters very well throughout the story. You will know what I am talking about if you read the book. After I complete the book, I just want to read it even more... I don't want it to end. All of Lurlene's books are the same, she is my favorite author and I've read most of her books already. I definitely recommend reading this one, its one of my favorites!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Novel, October 21, 2009
This review is from: Journey of Hope: Two Novels (Mass Market Paperback)
"I met a girl today. She was looking out over the sea, tears clouding her blue eyes. She was the prettiest girl I've ever seen. And surely God has sent her, for her heart is kind and full of love. And together, we will sail to Africa..." written in Ian's journal from the first day on their journey. Heather Barlow is the main character and her whole life she's dreamed of going to Africa on a missionary trip, so when she graduates high school that's exactly what she does. On her journey she meets Ian McCollum who teaches her that what she is going to see isn't going to be easy, but they need to help one person at a time. Heather meets a little girl named Kia who has a little sister with a cleft palate chin named Alice. The only problem is that Alice is in a village surounded by rebels and soliders and she has no way of getting help to survive. Ian takes a plane to the village, but before it lands it gets shot down and Ian dies. Leaving Heather crushed by Ian's death, she knows that she is the last hope for Alice's survival. Does she have enough courage to try and save her? I've read Lurlene McDaniel's books before, but this is by far my favorite. You should read this awesome book because it catches your attention and keeps you interested the whole time. I couldn't stop reading the book because it was so intriguing and exciting that I wanted to know what happened next. Another reason why this book is so great is because it is a heart-warming story for anyone who likes to read. Not only is there romance between Heather and Ian, there is also adventure on every page. The third reason why you should read this book is because there are many life lessons and a sense of hope throughout the book. With all of the death happening in Africa, the missionaries still bring hope to the people living there. Also, lessons on not taking the little things for granted and knowing that helping the world means helping one person at a time are all throughout this book. It is an amazing story to read because it's attention grabbing, heart-warming, and supplies a sense of hope. You will be glad you bought A Journey of Hope by Lurlene McDaniel after you finish reading the incredible story.

4.0 out of 5 stars angels of love, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Journey of Hope: Two Novels (Mass Market Paperback)
Angel of hope was the first book I've read by Lurlene Mcdaniel. I have too admit it was a pretty good book. I didn't even know there was a companion to this book until i seen it on amazon. Then i started reading a bunch of Lurlene Mcdaniel books. I'm mostly hooked on the one last wish novels. I only recently got angel of hope. And it was great. Even though i cried a lot. I would highly recommend any books by Lurlene Mcdaniel.
