Good Book,

This review is from: Journey Into Darkness...Ghosts & Vampires of New Orleans (Paperback)
Very informative and interesting. After recently visiting New Orleans for the fist time I was interested in learning more about the rumors of ghosts. This book gives street names and adresses of the buildings talked about and detailed history of the buildings and previous buildings that were in the same locations. Easy to read and hard to put down. I suggest reading this before you go or while you are in New Orleans.

Great Book, It Kept Me So Interested!,
By J. Makowsky (Cleveland, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey Into Darkness...Ghosts & Vampires of New Orleans (Paperback)
For all of us who love Ghosts, Vampires, Voodoo, and all that good stuff, then this is the book to read. If you live in New Orleans or not, it is a great book. I really enjoyed the many famous and not famous ghost stories of New Orleans. The parts on Voodoo were extremely intersting. It kept my interest because it told me about a religion I never new about. The vampire portion of the book taught me about Vampires and things I never knew, or would have even thought about. This book provoked thought and interest. I love it and I give it five stars. It is a tantalizing piece of literature which I would recommend for anyone to read, new ager or not, New Orleans resient or not! It was great.

Great counterpart to the tour,

I bought this book after attending the 2 hour Vampire Walking Tour of New Orleans, and this book is a perfect companion piece to it. The book is fairly detailed and highly (if somewhat unsettlingly)graphic. A lot is chronicled in 140 pages or so, and the stories are fascinating and easy to read. One slight gripe I had was that some of the stories that get only one paragraph in the book get a full blown detailed account on the tour, which is why I guess they sell it after the tour is over. Overall, very very good.

This book throws at antidotes to be taken as the truth. I'm from Louisiana and find that the book doesn't nail down the facts. Short on details, and long on expectations that the reader should believe the outlandish. Two hours of my life I won't get back, and didn't finish the book. Was a waste of time, and wasn't even entertaining.

I love New Orleans: the food, the music, the nightlife, the congenial attitude of its residents. While there for a conference, my sweetheart and I decided to take a "haunted tour" of the city, from which many of the stories here are related. (The book is written and published by the owners of the tour. As a disclaimer, my review does not reflect my experiences with the tour, which we both enjoyed.) The problem is that many of the stories written here aren't that good. As one reviewer correctly states, the book is long on expectation, but short on delivery. Maybe it is the case that these tales lose something when written, that they are just "better" when related orally. I tend to think that the stories are just poorly written to begin with. While the book has a lot of stories about the sites of alleged hauntings, the writing is quite thin - many tales are literally a paragraph or two in length. More detail, I think, around past events, the people involved in the story (both in the past and who are haunted now), and the results of these "hauntings" would have served the stories better. As it is, they are too thin to really raise the hairs on the back of your neck, my litmus test for a good ghost story. Another issue I have with the book - and I apologise, because it is purely pedantic, is the over use of exclaimation points. While I understand the writers wanting to instill as sens of thrill and excitement in the telling, having one exclaimation point! after another! in such rapid succession! really belabors the point and ultimately runs counter to its intent. It is a diverting read, and is perhaps worthy of a quick browse if you'll be in the city for any period of time, but frankly there are so many other wonderful distractions in New Orleans that your money would be better spent on a sazarc at the Roosevelt, a plate of etouffee at Cafe Pontalba, live music on Frenchman street, or maybe beignets and chickory at that famous restaurant off Jackson Square.

Horribly Written,
This review is from: Journey Into Darkness...Ghosts & Vampires of New Orleans (Paperback)
The stories about the locations in this book are decent, however, I would have liked more background information and detail. The author seems a bit out there and kept putting her outlandish comments in, where I would have liked more objectiveness.

I bought this book in anticipation of my trip to NOLA. I realized later that the vampire tour I took was written by this company 'Haunted History'. I think the book is pretty old tho, hopefully they have some newer stuff out.

I bought this book after doing the Haunted History tour in New Orleans. I loved it! I let someone borrow it and I never got it back so I purchased another copy on Amazon.com. Already knew what I was getting so I knew I would enjoy it. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because I am not into the vampires part but that is just my personal opinion. As far as shipping. It was fast and the condition of the book was great.
