Kane deserves better...,
By shuKy (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey Into Darkness: The Unauthorized History of Kane (Wwe) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a huge Undertaker/Kane fan. So when I heard about this book I was very excited to get my hands on it. Even with negative reviews, I still wanted to read it because I was curious to see how this writer will shape the story.
I've read it and I am very very disappointed. Kane is such a dark, mysterious and intense character with the most interesting past... this book totally destroyed that credibility. A Curse? What was the writer thinking? I know this is a fictional story, but putting the curse in makes the whole story less realistic and more childish. It's easy to blame everything on a curse, that is taking the easy way out. It seems like the writer was trying to come up with a "scary" past for Kane, but there was nothing dark and "scary" about this story. The writer tried too hard to force a dark tale, (like the whole thing with the Burrows family. That didn't provoke any emotions at all) and turned this story into a factual textbook read instead of a fiction. I agree with some of the reviews here, he tries too hard to fill in the holes in Kane's lives and it turns out to be terrible. Don't even get me started on the Katie Vick angle... I suspect also that all the positive reviews here are written by WWE staff (after seeing all the negative reviews, they decide to counterattack). Only a WWE staff member would say this book was well-written, when in fact it was boring. But if they have another writer willing to take another shot at Kane's story, I'll support it.

A History of Kane the Character not the man,
By
This review is from: Journey Into Darkness: The Unauthorized History of Kane (Wwe) (Mass Market Paperback)
First off people should read this book knowing it's not a biography of Glen Jacobs it's a fictional biography of Kane the character. With that put aside this was a pretty good book, I wish the wrestling aspect didn't have to be in it, but then why write the book. Aside from that the book was great, characters, plots, everything fit. This is a must for any wrestling fan. I would however like to see a review from a non wrestling fan to get their aspect from it.

Interesting backstory,

Journey Into Darkness: The Unauthorized History of Kane takes a look into one of the most interesting storylines in WWE history. From the fire that tragically killed his parents and brother, to his life in foster care, and his relationship with Katie Vick. Then, after getting a temporary job, Kane happens to see someone from his past on TV, and that eventually leads him into the WWE and seeing revenge on his brother.
This is a great book for anyone who wants to read the fictional back story on Kane, or even the Undertaker. Anyone who is a fan of Taker and wants to learn about some of his fictional history, this is a good read for them too. Obviously, this book is fiction, so only those who are interested in the storyline might find this book interesting. Definitely makes the Katie Vick storyline that appeared on TV seem less crazy. Though that storyline probably could have been executed better. However, part of the book does go fast, and seem rushed. And it cuts off in late 98. Obviously more has happened in the lives of the "Brothers of Destruction" since then. Bottom line, if your a big fan of Kane or the Undertaker, this book is a must have. If your not a very big fan of wrestling or aren't interested for a more in depth look into the storylines of Kane, this book probably isn't for you.

Fun, breezy read,

This is a lot different that most of the WWE books, but different in a good way. I've always liked the fact that WWE has always treated Kane differently than others in that they never really tried to go beyond the character. Most of their current wrestlers have no character. They are just regular people in wrestling tights, and that can get kind of boring. But one of the things most fans always liked about wrestling is the fact these "characters" are different than you or me.
Kane is one of the last of a dying breed, and that's why I looked forward to reading more about his character in a fictional book. If you have enjoyed the mystery of the Kane character, you will enjoy this book, which goes into most of the questions I always wondered about. The writing is pretty good and for the most part does a good job of filling in the holes. In some ways it felt like reading a real biography until you get to the end, when Kane and Undertaker meet for the first time since the fire.

It'll give insight to fans and non-fans alike.,
This review is from: Journey Into Darkness: The Unauthorized History of Kane (Wwe) (Mass Market Paperback)
Kane was always an interesting character. However, if anything, it's because it was accidental. I firmly believe that the success that Kane has had was the fact that his look kept people interested. The backstory that was created as he sort of went along wasn't ever developed, you just kind of "knew his deal."
The book covers exactly what needs to be covered. Everything incident, every piece of torment and anguish that twisted him into the man you see on Raw every week is laid out for all to see and believe me, there aren't too many dull moments in Kane's life. It's not perfect. The story gets a bit boring at times and drags on, the writing is simplistic and obviously is meant to cater to the perceived notion that wrestling fans can't read big fancy words so they have to dumb it down for us. No real style, either. Sometimes the things that happen are almost rattled off like "This happened, and then this, then this, and then THIS happened." It got annoying. Overall, anyone curious about Kane's backstory will find this a satisfying read for sure, whether they're a fan of wrestling or not, if only for the insight it provides.

What was this guy thinking when he wrote this book?,

As a wrestling fan and a fan of Kane, I was disappointed by Chiappetta's biography. He should have called his book The Overdramatized History of Kane. The first part, which chronicles Kane's childhood and high school years, reads like a Lifetime movie, completely overdramatic. The second part was laughable because Chiappetta's portrait of the "real" Kane, (the man outside the ring) was so unreal. This book, I presume, was supposed to shows us the inner depths of this WWE superstar's mind and learn why he is the way he is, but all this book shows is that the author doesnt really know anything about his subject.

I've read most of WWE's biographies, and decided to give this one a try. I think most fans who enjoy Raw and Smackdown for the storylines will enjoy this book for the same reasons. It gives insight into the big red monster and makes him a more sympathetic character.

When I heard Glen Jacobs, not Calloway, was having a book, I was excited, because I always wanted to know how this character came about. However, I found out the hard way that it was fiction.
This book is a disaster. It insults the wrestling fans' intelligence of what they know about Kane as a wrestling character. A lot of Kati Vick is in this book as if the WWE had to explain themselves for the disaster known as Katie Vick. What is odd is that they try to explain things that don't make sense. For example, they try to explain that Kane was born in Texas? I understand that the Mark Calloway is from Texas, but the Undertaker was from Death Valley which is in California. The story drags on about Kane's family. It tries so hard to explain things like the statue that he and the Undertaker had. Well, duh. We knew that back in 1998, we didn't have to be reminded of that. The WWE is in desperate need to sell entertainment that doesn't require wrestling. Sad really, but it's true. What gets me is why is his name Glen, but they call him Kane? They try to explain that Glen has this Kane Family Curse as if Kane was Jason. Poor writing. Not an exciting story. Would have been better if it was an autobiography. The WWE should stick with wrestling, of course they are screwing that up too.

This was a very interesting story! now this book is smiple reading it isnt 100% true to the tv version of kane but however dose fill in some blanks over all it makes you feal sorry for the man once read one chapter you cant stop i read this in about 16 hours and im not a very good reader. good story over all some things dont line up right with tv others do. you dont have to be a die hard wrestling fan to understand this story. if you like horror and some romance then you will like this or just cheering on the under dog but i am going to admit some stuff should been left out and filled in with more true facts but id buy this book for under $10

Not my taste, but my son is a wrestling fanatic and wanted this book. He's not much of a reader, but he devoured this book, so I guess it was good!
