5.0 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories, May 2, 2009

I purchased this book for my mother and aunt for Christmas who's parents came over from Italy and who are now gone. They loved it. Actually, my neighbor submitted one of his pictures for this book and met the author. His copy is signed by her! What I love about this book is any Italian with ancestors from Italy can relate to what's written. I can remember stories my mother and aunt would tell me and reading this book brought them back. Something all Italians should have as part of their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secret Landscape Revealed In Compelling Photographs, November 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Journey of the Italians in America (Hardcover)
There is a secret landscape in America unknown to most of us. Clues abound from the sublime sculptures adorning our public buildings to the humble neighborhood restaurant. Vincenza Scarpaci, a historian from Eugene Oregon, guides us through this territory by assembling from east to west an extraordinary collection of family photographs from all over the country.

Opening up the pages of The Journey of Italian Immigrants in America, you can see for yourself how the compelling and often touching family photographs reveal the story of America shaping Italian immigrants and ultimately of Italians influencing America. Vincenza interprets the photos with the keen mind of a scholar and the passionate heart of an Italian American.

The effect is dazzling. Vincenza has created a new form of history told the way history really happens which is family by family. She has reclaimed the story of Italians in America for each and every one of us but especially for those of us who are the descendants of these savvy, resourceful, self-sacrificing, skilled, misunderstood, hardworking, family and food loving people.

This book should be given as a gift to the next generation of Italian Americans so they know and to the older generation so they can retell their stories with pride. The Journey of the Italians in America

4.0 out of 5 stars The Journey of the Italians in America, February 18, 2009

"The Journey of the Italians in America" would be a welcome addition for anyone who is interested in the immigrant stories, not just Americans of Italian descent. The how and why immigrants came to this country has always fascinated me. Why they settled where they did and how they survived as strangers in a strange land is the very essence of what made America, the greatest country on Gods green earth.
As with any of the immigrant sagas, the perseverance and resourcefulness of these people is an inspiration to everyone.
Not only is the book well written, but the photos alone are "worth the price of admission".

Beautifully written. Vincenza Scarpaci has captured the very essence of what immigration was about and how the Italians assimilated themselves into their individual communities and moved forward into the future. This is a treasure trove of memories and photos of a time past and yet still lived in many ways. Even if you're not of Italian descent, you can't help but be pulled back in time with these stories and live them again. A big salute to Vincenza and the Italian American communities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian Americans, A Vital Thread in the American Fabric, December 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Journey of the Italians in America (Hardcover)
America, our fabric is strong! The Journey of Italians to America helps tell all of us why.

This book illustrates clearly in photo and text, how the heritage of Italians to America is an incredible story represented now by a contemporary presence in all of our great States. It is a collection of the stories of people who through courage and humility in their struggles and who through determination and pride of traditionsas and allegiance to a new land, have woven into the fabric of fifty United States.

The photos are incredible, each a visual treasure, supported by descriptive text. Together with the authors writing skills and organization of the book, they tell a compelling story of the varied journeys of Italians in America. They are stories that are paralled in every ethnic group in their own experiences.

My mother Anna, a retired dressmaker, is pictured in a document on page 184 with a caption. Her individual story represents just one of millions that this book brings to the light of our collective awareness. I thank the author, Vincenza Scarpaci for this book and graciously agreeing to publish my mother's U.S. Naturalization Certificate, a document Mom always treasured.

Italian Americans are a strong and vital thread in our fabric. I highly recommend this book to all.
