Great story. My Uncle's plane was the only one to go down on that mission and with that unit. They went into North Sea and all were KIA. My Uncle, probably flew with the guy on other missions according to my records. Heart warming story.

I actually knew about this story from before the book. I met Jeanne Spencer in 1999 when my wife and I were moving to California. We stayed with her at her home, as she's my wife's great-aunt. Anyway, I read about Jeanne's husband Chuck then (alas, I missed meeting him -- he had recently passed)... When I read some of the articles about Chuck's ordeal and what he did I was in awe! This man truly was a HERO and his later life is also a testimount to what a great guy he was! Read Jeanne's book... it's worth it!
