Book Description

A story of international adoption for kids

Ten year old Shelly is upset when she discovers that her parents plan on adopting a child. Shelly enjoys her 'only child' status and is not willing to give it up without a little struggle. As she becomes more aware and lets go of her selfishness, we see her evolve into a caring person anxious to become a big sister to a child far away.

This book is a valuable resource that could be given to the adopted child to read when she's a little older. It's also a story that could be handed to the child's siblings, cousins, classmates, and friends. Actually, with the world getting smaller each year, "The Journey to Mei" could be read by all children to foster an understanding of another country's traditions and culture.

- Freddie Remza

"The Journey to Mei" will be a valuable asset to all people adopting from China. Even though we've spoken about some of the issues of adoption when our child was younger, it's nice to see it in a story and to read and discuss it together. The book explains so much and does so very simply, clearly and delicately.

- C. Stasko

Mother of an adopted daughter from China

More About the Author

I have two passions...writing and traveling. What fun it is to combine the two! In my middle reader, "The Journey to Mei," I wrote about a family who decides to adopt a child from China. Because I actually spent several weeks in China and even visited an orphanage, I was able to use what I experienced in my storytelling. This story was written for the families who have adopted internationally. Sooner or later, questions will be asked and this sensitive novel will deal with many of them. Actually, with so many adopted Asian children integrated in our society, this book should be read by all children to help foster an understanding and acceptance.

My second novel,"Ride the Wave," is for Young Adults and is actually a sequel to the first. The story picks up about five years after the first ended. Here we have the Kilpatrick family preparing to move to Cape Town, South Africa. Again, my travels to South Africa help fused the sights, sounds, and experiences I had into my storyline. Having been an educator for over 30 years, it is my goal to not only entertain our young readers but also stimulate a curiosity of the world that is only a plane ride away.

My third novel takes off on a different path as it's written for adults or older teens. It was during a month's stay in Vietnam and Cambodia that inspired me to write,"The Orchid Bracelet." An American journalist, Allison Wagner, sets off for Vietnam to gather information on the progress made in that country since the end of the war in 1975. While at a restaurant in the Mekong Delta, Allison has a premonition of the possible fate of a young teen she meets. Although the story is fiction, it is based on reality, and raises the awareness of human trafficking.

The Journey to Mei is a wonderful read for the entire family. As a parent, it gave me insights into the feelings of a young child who was about to become an older sibling through adoption. My young daughters enjoyed the book. They found it to be fun, exciting and educational.

This review is from: The Journey to Mei (Paperback)
This is a timely book about adoption, but adoption by an American family of a Chinese daughter.

While the journey is a lot about the family, it's the young main character who is the heart of this book. What kinds of changes will happen for her once this tiny Chinese girl arrives home?

A must read. Really.
