4.0 out of 5 stars First Great Score of 2012! February 11, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
It seems like at the beginning of every year at least one or two fantasy films geared toward children are released and 2012 is no different. Journey 2 The Mysterious Island brings us the sequel to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The franchise draws inspiration from French author Jules Verne's classic 1864 novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth. This time around Brendan Frasier's starring role is replaced by Dwayne Johnson (aka "The Rock") who has played roles in several prior children's fantasies. Thankfully, the producers chose to stick with Canadian composer Andrew Lockington for the score who crafted an exciting, theme based score the first time around. Lockington spent almost a month backpacking in Papua New Guinea and spending time with two tribal groups to get in the tribal mood for the score. His goal for the score was to maintain a strong orchestral presence, but this time to add more vocal and tribal elements to give the score an island flavor. Last, but not least, he drew inspiration from reading Jules Verne's work, in its original French no less.

Lockington assembles a number of elements to fill out the musical palette for this film including four themes, as well as percussion and rhythmic devices. The four themes include: the original Journey theme, the Mysterious Island theme, a tribal/jungle percussion motif, and a beautiful solo vocal tribal theme. The themes are buttressed and accented throughout by choral chanting. Lockington also employs some synth percussion elements and accents to several cues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack and nice packaging from Amazon April 19, 2012
By Danny
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am a big fan of soundtrack music (scores). I got hooked when I found a Star Wars LP at a yard sale. I've collected soundtracks over the years and have become big fans of the composers. I'm not as familiar with Andrew Lockington as I am with others...but I've always enjoyed listening the music from family adventure films. It is bright, fast, has good melodies, and has comic flare to it. This holds true with this album so I was pretty pleased with the composer's work. Finding physical CDs of soundtracks is getting harder these days because everyone is movie to a more digital age and I was skeptical about getting a CD created/packaged upon order by Amazon. I've bought several from them over the years and have always been pleased with the packaging that they include. They look pretty much like one that you would find at a store. They contain liner notes and art work. I like owning physical copies because I believe they are the best back up you can have if your music is damaged or lost in the digital world. I've been really pleased with Amazon's packaging of these CDs and the sound quality is great too.
The soundtrack is fun...the packaging is really can't go wrong with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long live the compact disc! November 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This soundtrack is, indeed, very good. But I'd like to say something about Amazon's on-demand CDR service...

I have been a film music enthusiast for a very long time and I find it absolutely unacceptable that nowadays lots of music is only made available in the form of MP3 downloads. Afterall, when it comes to music which uses such a large frequency spectrum as symphonic music, only the sound of MP3s that have been compressed at a very high bitrate comes close to the original CD sound-quality. Most of the downloadable music sounds like crap.

I was quite sceptic about Amazon's offer to produce a CDR from "uncompressed sources" on demand. Despite the fact that Amazon's customer support couldn't verify that they truly have access to uncompressed sources and although the soundtrack's label didn't even bother to answer my question, I took the chance and ordered a CDR.

It came by mail today. The packing is, indeed, just like that of a "real" CD. The CD itself is professionally color-labeled.

I immediately put it into my PC and scanned it with a software which is pretty reliable when it comes to determining the authenticity of an audio CD using the character of the audio information it contains to predict its possible source and to see if it's an original studio record or a reconstruction from a lossy encoded data (for example, MP3). All tracks checked out as original CD digital audio tracks.

Therefore I can absolutely recommend Amazon's on-demand CDRs - at least for this soundtrack. The quality of the product is very good and the price is absolutely acceptable, since one gets a real CD made from uncompressed sources with perfect sound-quality and not some virtual-reality, lousy-quality, MP3 downloadable album.

Nice movie cuts with a little humor interjected from D.Johnson's singing (quality voice by the way) and nicely packaged....a good investment if you like scores.
