A Journey to the New World is wonderful,
By katherine, 13 (MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
A Journey to the New World by Kathryn Lasky is a fictional diary of Remember Patience Whipple based on records from the Mayflower in 1620. Remember Patience Whipple is a 12 year old girl who is opinionated, but can only confide in her precious diary she calls Imp. Times were very different back then, especially for young girls, as illustrated in her story. For example, she had to wear three petty coats, could not speak her mind, and was expected to behave like an adult everyday. Life on the Mayflower was rough and tedious. Sleeping quarters were cramped, there was limited amounts of sea worthy food, people got motion sickness often, and you did the same thing everyday; wake up, eat, help around the ship, go to sleep. This book can be easily enjoyed for it has an interesting yet historical story line, and is told through a quiet, strong minded young lady who a lot of girls can relate to. It has simple vocabulary, yet is very insightful. This book is great because Remember Patience Whipple sees and meets new beings which is educating for the reader because it differs from our modern world. For example she meets the authentic Native -American named Squanto to whom she gives pudding and foods in exchange of his tribe's foods, and helpful hints for hunting in the rugged North America and living in their new Plimouth Settlement. Although A Journey to the New World is educating and captivating, this book would be for ages eight to thirteen years old, (though some grown ups have found it enjoyable), because it is not a very challenging book to read, yet is great at keeping the reader wanting to learn more about Remember and daily life in the 1620's.

A Pilgrim girl's new life in the New World.,
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
Remember Patience Whipple, called Mem, is a bit frightened at the thought of the New World her family is sailing to on the Mayflower. She hears tales of strange "feathered people" who will attack the settlers. But she has more immediate concerns - the dreadful Billington boys, who mercilessly tease Mem and her friend Hummy, the ever present seasickness, and the daily boredom during the long, tedious sea voyage. But once she arrives in the New World, things become even worse. During the long, cold first winter at Plymouth, many settlers become sick and die. Mem is frightened that her family might be next. When spring comes, she thinks they are safe - until her mother falls ill and dies. Can Mem find the strength and courage to go on without her mother? And can she come to accept her future stepmother, quiet, sad Mistress Potts? What I liked best about this book is that it told what a young girl who sailed on the Mayflower and lived at Plymouth Colony might have thought and done. In making the main character a young girl, the author brought the history to life, and I really like the fictional diary format used in this series - it makes you feel really close to the characters.

Remember Patience Whipple's diary and adventure to the New World.,
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
Remember Patience Whipple, nicknamed Mem is a young pilgrim girl, her life in danger by the notorious King James. She is aboard the Mayflower, that will one day take it's passengers to the New World. Even though she longs to see the New World, Mem is afraid of all the feathered men and women that inherit it. Days in the Mayflower are long and boring and she and her friend, Hummy are constantly annoyed by the Billington Boys. But when they set foot on the New World, a furious plague attacks her people, killing many including her mother. Her friend, Hummy soon leaves her and Mem is in despair and longs to leave on a boat to a place she once called home. But after weeks of mourning and despair, Remember catches the deadly illness and must fight for her survival. This is a wonderful diary on a pilgrim girl and I found it very enjoyable.

The First and Best(I think),
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
A Journey to the New World was my first Dear America book and (I think) my favorite book. The plot is good and the journey to the "New World" was even a little exciting. This book gives you a taste of the hardships, sorrows, and joys of the Pilgrims. You feel what Mem feels because her emotions come across strong. It's almost like being there.

This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
The book A Journey to the New World is the fictional yet accurate account of the pilgrims' settlement in America, the new world, to be free from the king's religious oppression. The story is told in diary form, through young Remember Patience Whipple, making it easier for younger readers to comprehend but benefit in full. The book is the beginning of a new nation, an unexplored future of pain and suffering, joy and happiness. The book is finly illustrated; another great accomplishment by Kathryn Lasky.

Five Stars,

This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
A wonderful beginning to the Dear America Series. Remember Patience Whipple better known as Mem is a twelve year old girl on the Mayflower with her parents and little sister Blessing. Set up in a diary form Mem writes about the voyage, her new friend Hummy and her experiences on the Mayflower and the first couple months at Plymouth Rock. She meets one of the Native Americans Squanto, experiences losing her new friend Hummy, her mother's illness and death, and her father's remarriage. Kathryn Lasky made Mem such a delightful and wonderful girl and paints a vivid picture of life on the Mayflower and at Plymouth Rock.

Pretty Good Look at Pilgrim Life,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
This is a pretty good book about a pilgrim girl coming to America in the early 17th century. I give it four stars because even though the writing is descriptive and well-paced, the main character is too headstrong and stereotypical for me. Also, I didn't feel any really strong emotions while reading this book. However, I do recommend it as a beginner for the series because it is set before any of the other books in the series.

WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
This is a great book about a girl named Remember Patience Whipple but everyone calls her Mem. She got her name when her mom named her Patience and then found out that Mem wasn't patient at all. She named her Remember because Mem's mom wanted to "remember" her sister. Mem first lived in England then moved to Holland and a couple years later got on the Mayflower and sailed to the U.S.A (Plymouth rock). She was really worried about falling off the boat or making it to land. This book takes place around 1620 to 1621. Mem was 12 years old at the time. Her mother (who she calls Mam) gets sick for a while then gets better then gets sick again and dies, along with a lot of others. My favorite part is when her father spots an island and names it Grace Island after Mem's Mother instead of naming it Whipple after his whole family.
I give this book a four and a half star rating because it had really good description and Kathryn Lasky made me feel like I was there. I also would recommend this book to anyone who would like an exiting sea or adventure story, or just wants to read a good book. The ending is really good too but that is for me to know and for you to find out!!!

The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
Remember Patience Whipple is about a young girl and her journal. The little girl Patience Whipple is about her trip going to the New World on the Mayflower. It tells about what it was like back then traveling on a ship. It tells stuff like when she was sick she had to cast over the ship, and there was barely any food or water. Patience Whipple was twelve years old, and she got her name because she was not patient. Her father had made her diary from scraps of leather from the cobbler. Patience Whipple named her diary Imp. She writes in her diary every day and it tells about what things she has to go through in her everyday life. I think you will like the book very much. It is a good book to read and if you do read it, I hope you will enjoy it.

Remember Remember Patience Whipple!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Remember Patience Whipple, Mayflower, 1620 (Dear America Series) (Hardcover)
A Journey to a New World makes you feel as though you are on a difficult journey across the Atlantic Ocean yourself! In the diary of Remember Patience Whipple, you will find sadness, excitment, and joy as they take a long trip across the sea. In this story, Remember experiences sickness in her family, a new baby brother, and a few horrible deaths when she lands in America. She encounters Indians and is surprised on their little clothing! She befriends them and likes them so much! This book is really good, but I only rated it a four because there are already so many books about pilgrams and the journey on the Mayflower out there already, so it wasn't all that original. But as it was the very first book in the Dear America Series, I think it was a good start for this now blooming series.
