Here's another immense Bear Family Records Box Set; this one covers the early years of the great Waylon Jennings. This is the pre-"Outlaw" Waylon, before the hype and huge late-70's commercial success. There are 6 CD's here, all of them expertly mixed and with superb sound. While many of the songs included here are Cover songs, Waylon's take on them are as good or better than the originals. The first set of music is typical Waylon-style honkytonk, but is followed by Waylon's brief (thankfully) flirtation with Folk music. We are also introduced to Waylon's take on the Bakersfield Sound; the influences of Wynn Stewart are unmistakable. As with all of the Bear Family releases, there's a huge booklet (this one is actually hardcover, nearly the size of a large phot album) detailing Waylon's early recording career, with pictures from Buddy Holly and Faron Young, and even a young Jessi Colter. This one is well worth your money and will provide hours of listening pleasure. A+

Now this is a BOX set! It's actually the 2nd box set released by bear records in Germany on Waylon. More hopefully on the way. Each CD is PACKED with songs! You get extra Demos and Alternate versions as well. It's sad that a company from Germany is the only one that has the balls to put this out, along with the other box set (Detiny's child). America does everything Fast, Skimpy and cheap! That sound like a Waylon song almost....Fast, Skimpy and Cheap!

If you are a Waylon fan, asI am, you simply must invest in this collection of early releases by thismost unique artist. One canlisten as Waylon, the hugenatural talent, finds thesongs, and the sound thatmade him the legend he is today.I must admit the repeating of a few songsthrough out the six albumcollection, left me a little disapointed. But that's how Waylon has always left me, wanting tohear just a little more

Prime Waylon - Sensitive Ballads and Artful Country-Rock,
By A Customer
This review is from: Journey-Six Strings Away (Audio CD)
Before he grew a goatee and became a "outlaw" which led to drug addiction, bankruptcy and poor record sales; Waylon Jennings churned out some of the most sensitive ballads (late 60s) and good-time country-rock (early 70s) around. Most of these songs are no longer available except for this set. A large and colorful 60 page book with many rare photos of Waylon and others from the late 60s-early 70s is included. Waylon's country-rock is far superior to what is monotonously put out by today's country stars. The playfulness of "I've Got Eyes for You", the suprising moodiness of "Revelation", the country-flavored irony of "Singer of Sad Songs", it is all here and nowhere else. Pricey for sure, but this set showcases Waylon at his prime.
