Book Description

Peter's world is a lawless society of darkness and violence. At 21, he has no hope for the future. Life inside the mountain caves of Auchmeros is hard; food is scarce. There is no protection for the weak and only the strong survive. Just before his initiation into a violent gang, a stranger who glows from within approaches Peter. Andrew offers to lead Peter to a better place. He claims there is a world outside the caves filled with light and plenty of food. Contrary to his fear, Peter decides to find out for himself and follow Andrew. In Thélo, Peter discovers light, fresh fruit and vegetables, friendship, and the gracefully attractive, Karis! But can Peter live according to Thélo's lifeguides? Does he, a descendant of the king's enemies, have the right to enjoy such a place?Only King Elzene can show Peter the truth and teach him that feather clumps are really wings for flying.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Crafted Allegory, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Journey to Thelo (Paperback)
Journey to Thélo focuses on Peter, a young man whose trip to the outside world of Thélo serves as a spiritual allegory for the believer's journey from darkness to light. Indeed, the tale of his race mirrors, to some degree, the story of humankind's fall and redemption.

The story moves quickly and the allegory is obvious without being overbearing. The author draws a thorough picture of Peter's dank world in the space of a very few pages, and she is able to create a vivid contrast with the vibrant world of Thélo. Even if the book is not long enough to allow for a complete fleshing out of the characters, the reader will truly be able to care about the tale's hero and take an avid interest in his fate. Allegory is a difficult genre to pull-off well, but Thompson manages to use it successfully in this little gem of a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read for both teens and adults, November 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Journey to Thelo (Paperback)
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book because I was told it was written for teens. I found that the plot kept me interested till the very end, and the subject matter was just as applicable to older readers. Aren't we all search for meaning in our life? We follow Peter, the main character, in his search and in turn do a bit of searching ourselves... I hope there is a sequel! Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plato's Cave, September 6, 2003
By
kelsey scholle (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Journey to Thelo (Paperback)
An excellent analogy/allegory of one man's search for truth. Excellent for young readers or philosophers seeking to understand the commonality of a complex philosophy of Plato i.e. Plato's Cave. A challenging yet exciting adventure of truth, this book is indeed a must read.
