5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry in spirit, August 14, 2002

This review is from: Journey to Timbooktu (Paperback)
I have never read poetry like the book Journey To TimbookTu edited by Memphis Vaughn, Jr. This book is a magnificent collection of poems and essays featuring over 75 poets and writers.

The Journey To TimbookTu begins with the introduction. Vaughn gives us some history on how the book was developed. It's interesting to note how Vaughn's desire to pay homage to great African Empires and cultures led to the name TimBookTu. The motherland is at the heart of this poetic journey. This is one journey all African Americans can relate to. There is power in the words of these poetic expressions. You can feel the spirit of the book as you read. It's like going on a trip but never leaving home.

Vaughn's essay on The Last Resort is awesome. It reads like a short fictional story. The poets and essayists who contributed to the journey are to be commended for writing a collection of soul felt poetic expressions.

It took me several days to read this book but what impressed me the most were the poems. The poems are truly a reflection of African American experiences. I recommend that you visit the author's website and buy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great works from Timbooktu, August 13, 2002

This review is from: Journey to Timbooktu (Paperback)
Journey to Timbooktu is an excellent array of works found on one of my favorite websites .... I have been inspired by so many of the poems featured on the timbooktu website and now this anthology has brought the talent of so many together. These authors so eloquently address all issues of the African American culture and Mr. Vaughan has divided their works up into chapters that uniquely describe their subject matter. If you are a poet, writer or just have a love for literary talent this collection of poem, essays and short stories will certainly captivate your mind.

I highly recommend this book to all with an appreciation for writing and the expression of our African American Culture. Great job Mr. Vaughan and I knew with your insight and vision you could see this through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of contemporary poetry and writing, July 30, 2002

This review is from: Journey to Timbooktu (Paperback)
The anthology is a wonderful collection of poetry, short stories and essays that resonates with a diversity of words and thoughts from contemporary African-American writers. The selection of the works in the anthology provided a very good mix of thought-provoking poetry, poignant essays, and erotic poetry and fiction.

I was very impressed with the cover art, the layout and the quality of work that went into this anthology. I have always enjoyed the works found on TimBookTu and now I have the anthology to add to my bookshelf. I would urge everyone who enjoys great poetry and writing to get their copy today.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable journey!, July 7, 2003

This book is a "must" have 4 all poets!
It not only has great poetry, it has great writing.
Most poetry books, in my opinion, are overly priced. This excellent book is well worth the price.
I highly recommend this book. I like that fact that it has so many different poets writing the poetry. A book this size would become boring if only one poet wrote it.
I appreciate the effort that went into publishing this book and I also love the warm colors of the bookcover.
This journey into "Timbooktu" is a great read.
Thanks 4 sharing with us, Mr. Vaughn Jr. & contributors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Global Collaboration, October 20, 2002

...I personally feel that "Journey to Timbooktu," is an excellent edition to any anthology readers library. It has short fiction of many genre's (Horror, romance, suspense, ect.), heartwarming and at times tear jerking poetry. Also a variety of essays and other scriptured jewels, from some of the most talented writer's in the world. Mephis Vaughan has an eye for talent as well as a knack for the written word himself. I can't wait to see what he does with volume two. If you don't have a copy go out right now and buy one. As for those select few who can just order online and have it shipped to your home...buy two. You know friends and family are going to want to read one, so you need to have an extra one for yourself. To all the artists who contributed to the success of the manuscript..excellent job!!! I wish you continued success and best of luck on all future artistic endeavors.

Sincerely,
Levi James Baldwin III
