Montgomery's best,

R.A. Montogmery could never equal the mastery of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" genre that Edward Packard did. Too often his books were preachy and overly arbitrary. This book may be his best effort, however, telling a fairly gripping series of adventures of your search for the lost city of Atlantis. The series was new and fresh at this point, and many of its best books were among its first nine.

I was in the bookstore tonight with my son and saw something wonderful - a whole display of Choose Your Own Adventure Books ! I loved these books when I was a kid, and my son (age 6) found a box of about 50 of them I was keeping downstairs and has been reading them over the last few months (with help, of course !) He loves to read, and loves the fact he gets to make choices in the book.In any event, this particular book was one that I had in my original collection. I agree with the reviewer above - for the most part, Edward Packard's books were better ... but that's not to say RA Montgomery's aren't worth a purchase. If you havent tried these books, they're a great way to get kids ages 6 - 12 interested in reading. Now if only they'd reprint the "Which Way" series as well. I loved Vampires, Spies and Alien Beings.

Don't buy this book expecting a reprinting of the original 1978 Choose Your Own Adventure book. The text has been revised, though the revision is serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, and they're on nearly every page, so it's impossible to ignore them. Buy a used copy of the original book, or choose something else to read.

Still memorable after nearly 20 years,

I was 7 or 8 when I read this book, and it's still the only Choose Your Own Adventure Book I remember. It was well written and had a fresh feel to it, unlike the innumerable other books in the Choose Your Own Adventure series. The twists and turns were exicting (when I was that young), and the endings offered up were sufficiently pleasing. If someone has never read one of these books, and is interested, I'd have to say that this is the one to read.

A Classic in the making,

This book is about your quest to find the lost city of Atlantis. Along the way watch out for killer sharks, giant squids, underwater earthquakes and more. One wrong choice and you could end up with treasure beyond your dreams or sleeping with the fishes!!The Choose Your Own Adventure series is excellent to motivate your children and students to read. The book lets you make your own choices and find out what happens to your character. Kind of like a video game in a book. If you choose to lauch you adventure in reading, go to page 5. If you choose to miss the biggest thing since Harry Potter with a Pokemon twist in collectable books, go to page 36.

A fascinating and unique adventure,

Journey Under the Sea is one of the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books, and among the best ever written. Combining the elements of the unknown with that of high-adventure, the book involves the reader from the start and, depending on your "fate-altering" decisions, will end with a wallop. Find the Lost City of Atlantis, or explore the other mysterious locales of the ocean. But no matter where you turn, danger awaites you in this exciting multi-path quest of never-ending suprise and suspense.

In my opinion I would like to recommend this book to anyone who hates reading. This book takes place in the deep Atlantic in the lost city of Atlantis. In this book you are the character. What happens in the book is that you are an underwater explorer. This is your biggest mission. You must find the lost city of Atlantis.

Good idea, not very well executed,

This book could have been alot better. The scenarios in which you are searching the ocean for the lost city are well detailed with a good sense of atmosphere, but when you do reach Atlantis (via that metal lid in the rocks), the story becomes so vague and sped up, it loses most of it's appeal. Some of the events loop into eachother and it's easy to face that attacking squid over and over again. There is not that much character development when it comes to the people of Atlantis. They are described as 'people who look just like you, only they wear greek clothing' and that's it. There is also an event in which you lead a revolt against the King of Atlantis in what seems like 2 sentences. This is not Montgomery's better books. I would say he fared alot better with 'Space and Beyond'. One of the very few things that are appealing about this book are the cool illustrations from Granger.

When I was in grade school we read these books, I wanted to get it for my son so he could see effects of decision making! I couldn't find it anywhere!! I appreciate the "recycling" of books especially those out of circulation. The book was in good condition, and ready for me to pass along to my son

Under the Sea,
This review is from: Journey Under the Sea (Choose Your Own Adventure #2) (Paperback)
The seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake. You dream about going up there, but that is a big mistake. Just look at the world around you right here on the ocean floor. Such wonderful things surround you. What more are you looking for?Under the sea (two times). Darling it's better, down where it's wetter, take it from me. Up on the shore they work all day. Out in the sun they slave away, while we are devoting full time to floating under the sea. |
