Editorial Reviews

Review

After a generation out of print, the original Choose Your Own Adventure series is back. First published in 1979, the books let readers remix their own stories and face the consequences. A quarter-billion copies sold worldwide as kids raced to discover lost civilizations, navigate black holes, and go in search of...the Yeti. The original titles have returned in bookstores, revamped with 21st century references (cell phones!). Everyone enjoys playing the hero - especially if the hero has cool gadgets. --Wired Magazine --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

Can You Find the Lost City of Atlantis?

You are a deep sea explorer on a mission to locate the lost city of Atlantis. According to legend, the city mysteriously disappeared many thousands of years ago. One day, as you are searching the ocean depths, you are trapped outside your underwater vessel. As your friends begin to haul you up, a giant squid heads directly toward you. Will you attack the squid with your spear gun, or will you signal your friends to pull you up at top speed?

If you decide to fight the squid, turn to page 17. If you decide to signal your friends to pull you up at top speed, risking your life, turn to page 18. But be careful! There are many dangers waiting for you in the ocean. You might get swallowed by a large fish. Or you could make it back to the boat and continue your expedition once again.

What happens next in the story? It all depends on the chooices you make. How does the story end? Only you can find out! And the best part is that you can keep reading and rereading until you've had not one but many incredibly daring experiences! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

3.0 out of 5 stars Montgomery's best, September 12, 2000
By
R.A. Montogmery could never equal the mastery of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" genre that Edward Packard did. Too often his books were preachy and overly arbitrary. This book may be his best effort, however, telling a fairly gripping series of adventures of your search for the lost city of Atlantis. The series was new and fresh at this point, and many of its best books were among its first nine.

4.0 out of 5 stars They're BAAAAACK, May 26, 2006
By
I was in the bookstore tonight with my son and saw something wonderful - a whole display of Choose Your Own Adventure Books ! I loved these books when I was a kid, and my son (age 6) found a box of about 50 of them I was keeping downstairs and has been reading them over the last few months (with help, of course !) He loves to read, and loves the fact he gets to make choices in the book.

In any event, this particular book was one that I had in my original collection. I agree with the reviewer above - for the most part, Edward Packard's books were better ... but that's not to say RA Montgomery's aren't worth a purchase. If you havent tried these books, they're a great way to get kids ages 6 - 12 interested in reading.

Now if only they'd reprint the "Which Way" series as well. I loved Vampires, Spies and Alien Beings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: This is NOT the original version, April 20, 2007

Don't buy this book expecting a reprinting of the original 1978 Choose Your Own Adventure book. The text has been revised, though the revision is serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, and they're on nearly every page, so it's impossible to ignore them. Buy a used copy of the original book, or choose something else to read.
