A Kid's Review on October 5, 2000
Format: Paperback
I really liked the book. Eric, Julie, and Neal are going on a journey to the core of the volcano to find the jewel that Spar has stolen. Spar stole the jewel which is a glove with a diamond on it from the King. On their journey the three kids meet wizards, monsters and lumpies. The part when the lumpies attacked the fire monsters was the funniest part of the book. If you want to find out if the kids made it or not, read the book. I thought the book was going to be boring, but I ended up really enjoying the book and finished it really fast.

The most interesting reviews of the Droon series are listed under "The Hidden Stairs", which is volume 1 in the series. For what it's worth, if you like #1, you'll like this and later volumes. If you didn't like #1, (too simple, too obvious, too generic), you probably won't like this one or the later ones. They are all pretty much the same. In fact, the later ones seem more rushed and are even thinner than the early ones.

We enjoyed the magic in the story. It was a wonderful fantasy story. We definitely would like to read more books from this series. The book has funny parts, risk-taking, interesting characters and a good story. We would recommend it to anyone!

I enjoyed reading this book for my granddaughter even more than Book 1. It has a simple but unpredictable plot, and characters with whom it is easy to identify. The bad guys are bad, and the good guys are good. This is the way it should be for a four-year old.

I was right to be leery of starting a series with over 40 books! For now not only am I addicted to these books but my children are also. I am reading ahead of them and reading them a few chapters each night before bed. They love the story so far, and I am thoroughly enjoying it also. To be honest I have yet to read anything by Tony Abbott that disappointed. And going back and reading some of his earlier works has been a blast both for me and for the kids.

Droon is an interesting world to visit. For when we go there always seems to be a task for Neal, Julie and Eric to complete. And this time is no different. This time they join Princess Keeah, the wizard Galen Longbeard, and we meet new creatures the lumpies and go on an adventure. In the first adventure in Droon the Eye of Dawn a crystal that can control nature was lost to the evil Sparr. In this story our team of adventures head to his secret hideout inside a volcano to try and retrieve it. We also find out that not all things are as they appear, and some who work for Sparr might even be forced to do so. Can the team get into the volcano, can they find the Eye of Dawn, can they get back out again. Come read the story and find out.

Droon is becoming a fun place to visit time and time again. And this story has a bit of everything, a magic doorway, strange creatures, adventure, friendship, the desert, a secret lair and a hook at the end to bring you back again! As mentioned I am enjoying reading the stories, and my kids are also, and hopefully in a few years the younger kids will be able to reread these books to me. But for now Droon is a great part of family reading time.

Love to read the Secrets of Droon to my first grade students. Kinda reminds me of Harry Potter. I talk about how the illustrations are very scary and then the students are prepared. I wish the illustrator was a little more kid friendly. I do like that the main characters want to help The princess and they always make it home safely.

I've been very pleased with this series as a whole. My 8 year old son is reading an average of one Droon book a week - which is very exciting to see. It is the first book that has peeked his intrest in reading. If your child likes fantasy, magic and adventure and is still in the developing stages of reading give these a try.
