Book Description

June 6, 2002
In July 2000, Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie crowned a long career as pastor, broadcaster, and community developer with her election to the bishopric of the African Methodist Episcopal Church-the first time ever a woman has been selected. A powerful minister, a poised and attractive woman, a caring community leader, wife and mother, Bishop McKenzie was the subject of a front-page New York Times profile and communicates her message to tens of thousands each year with her electrifying preaching style. Now, in Journey to the Well, she shares her wisdom with Christian women of all denominations, everywhere.

Journey to the Well takes the biblical story of the Samaritan woman who meets Jesus at the well. It breaks down her experience-and the author's own-into twelve lessons through which a woman can empower herself, conquer adversity, and accomplish great things in her life. Each lesson includes Bible quotations, inspirational sayings, activities, and self-exploratory questions to guide the reader in a transforming return to God, self, and community-breaking through racial, gender, cultural, and ethnic barriers to discover a new, enlightened way of thinking and living.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food for the Spirit, June 11, 2004

This review is from: Journey to the Well (Hardcover)
I have been enriched by reading this book by Bishop McKenzie. It came to my attention as a recommended reading posted at my school, Trinity College of D.C. Not aware of Bishop McKenzie, I was intrigued by the summary of this book and decided to read it. What a tremendous blessing. As I read it, I realized that so many women travel often to the well in our daily lives. Just trying our best, no matter how painful, to do what we can until things get better. Like the Samarian woman at the well, we yearned for something different in our lives that would free us from many of the cultural, societal, and spiritual bonds that bind us. Dr. Mckenzie reminds us systematically through the additional Biblical references, exercises, and journal assignments that support this blessed encounter that we are waiting for our opportunity to meet Jesus at the well. Pausing to answer this blessed stranger's questions and boldly asking questions of Him healed her. Reading this book, we are also healed. I encourage women from all walks of life, age or religion to read this book. Like the Samarian woman who met Jesus at the well, you, too will find your voice. through His grace be healed to go forth and tell everyone of the man you just met who knew everything about you and loves you dearly. Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars life changing, September 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Journey to the Well (Hardcover)
I have read the book and was blessed to see the play. My favorite quote: 'I release my tears to make room for my tomorrow"
This book is a tool that will assist in the self-reflection, self-evaluation process in order to move past every issue of rejection, doubt, fear, low self-esteem, the overworked mother, overtime spouse, and every other label that others have placed on you in which you adopted their view of who you are, but this book will not only clarify who you are but whose you are.

Get the book as well as the journal and take a journey into meeting the man who can tell you all about yourself!
You first must take inner reflection therefore to see the outer manifestation. Be blessed through this literary work that will fill your spirit, mind, body and soul.

Simply life changing.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's more than water at the Well, July 22, 2003

This review is from: Journey to the Well (Hardcover)
Journey to the Well takes an otherwise short scripture and explores the role of Jesus in the lives of everyday women. McKenzie delves into our lives and roles as women and shows how we can experience a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her style of writing is engaging and inviting and kept me savoring with anticipation of each new chapter. A must read for all women, especially those needing affirmation of the importance of their relationship with the Most High.
