Book Description

Every therapist, counselor, or friend of a woman who has been raped will value Journey to Wholeness. It teaches and reinforces what survivors must know and practice if they are to become whole again.

Each chapter focuses on a particular rape-related topic, gives facts and information about rape and it's effect on the survivors, and guides you through a series of self-reflective exercises that involve thinking, feeling, and writing.

There also are exercises to guide you through your memories, thoughts, and feelings. These exercises are meant to help you put the emotional and mental remnants of the experience behind you.

This book is in two sections. Part 1 is for those of you who were raped a while back and who are dealing mostly with the mental and emotional repercussions of having been violated. Part 2 is specifically designed for those who were recently raped. This part provides information about matters that require prompt attention such as obtaining practical and emotional support from family and friends, securing medical care, and whether or not to report the rape to the police and prosecute the offender.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A wonderful, sensitive, informative book that can be used equally by professionals and survivors. As a professional, this book gives me a framework in working with survivors. It is also simple and self explicit enough that I can give to my clients as a companion to take with them between sessions to help maintain the continuity of the process, so that they never feel alone. They can use the information and do the exercises in Journey to Wholeness when feeling overwhelmed and depressed, instead of getting under the covers, drawing the shades, closing the doors and isolating. Journey to Wholeness is a brilliant, creative approach to the issues facing rape survivors. -- Aviva Katz, MA NCC former head of guidance City as School, NYC

From the Author

Vicki Aranow, author: Someone who is raped is often victimized more than once-first by her attacker and then again by well-meaning family, friends and society at large who misunderstand the crime and cannot comprehend the invisible emotional scars. The idea for this workbook came to me during a post graduate social work course on the importance of nonverbal communication. I felt that a self-help workbook would be a non-threatening way to approach healing for victims and those close to them and/or working with them. I asked Monique Lang to develop it with me. 'Journey to Wholeness' represents a collaborative effort. It is my hope that it will become a valuable resource for all.

This review is from: Journey to Wholeness: Healing from the Trauma of Rape (Paperback)
As a professional who has worked with many survivors of sexual trauma, I highly recommend this book to survivors of rape, those who work with them and those who care about them. Further, as and Art Therapist, I love the way that Ms. Lang has created a workbook with just enough guidance so that the reader uses her own words and images to assist her in the healing process. This book truly presents a framework for DISCOVERY and RECOVERY with excellent useful information and a very compassionate, supportive style.
