This is an example of a yet another would be "shaman" who thinks that visions obtained from the hallucinogenic tea brewed from Banisteriopsis qualifies them to teach us mortals about medicine work. Nothing could be further from truth.

Ayahuasca is a magnificent plant. The spirit of this plant is a demanding, exacting, tempestuous and awesome teacher. An ayahuasca shaman devotes his life to studying the vine; he/she apprentices for decades to one or several maestros. There are very few legitimate Western mediators of plant teachings and Ross is not one of them - you do not become an ayahuascero through a weekend visit to Peru or Ecuador. In this book we more or less get insights obtained by a sincere and dedicated tourist. If interested in listening to a true ayahuascero, try to obtain the music from Don Jose Campos.

At last! The mystery and mumbo-jumbo of "shamanism" is explained in terms of user-friendly Science. A must-read for anyone who has ever wondered just what shamanism is really about - and how we in the 21st century West can partake of its simple elegance without ingesting strange substances or travelling to obscure corners of the planet.

It is hard to argue with his conclusions, especially when you experience them for yourself in the exercises he includes. Sometimes this book gave me goosebumps, sometimes it made me cry, sometimes it made me laugh out loud as I recognised myself in its pages. It is a real page-turner and one I have now read three times and WILL read again. Simply, brilliant!

Ross Heaven, British author, initiate of Haitian Vodou, shaman... has produced his second book, following "The Journey to You". This second work, "Spirit In The City", investigates the search for the sacred in everyday life. Yet another, "Getting to Know the Spirits of the City". Ross Heaven provides a series of exercises, things people can do at home, to develop spiritual awareness, channel energy, rebuild personality, self-heal and self-evolve. Ross Heaven became Houngan sur point Ogoun Badagri in January 2000... He is a priest of Ogoun Badagris. All Ogouns are lwa of power, and Ogoun Badagris is specifically that power which comes from negotiation, diplomacy, the balance of power... In his spiritual investigations, Ross has journeyed several times to Peru; and participated with traditional shamans in ceremonies which included the use of the ayahusca vine... In fact, I have found the exercises in "The Journey to You" so useful that I am still working my way through them, taking my time to really savor them and derive the maximum benefit from each one.
