More About the Author

Before she learned how to read, Angela Nickerson refused to eat broccoli and aspired to be a tap dancing nurse. However, once her mom taught her to read, Angela's medical aspirations expired. Her favorite books were those set in "the olden days" in places far more exotic than Dallas, Texas. In her thirties Angela translated that passion for history and travel into a column of local biographical profiles as well as her first book, A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome.

When she was fifteen, Angela's grandparents, both worldly travelers, gave her a life-changing birthday gift: they took her to Europe. Together they took a nearly-nude summer sauna in Finland where the sun hardly set. They explored Red Square in Moscow, visited one of the first privately-owned restaurants in the USSR, and brushed their teeth with Pepsi. The three-country tour ended in England with a trip to the Tower of London and the purchase of some fantastic Princess Diana kitsch.

After graduating from high school in 1991, Angela went to St. Olaf College in Minnesota. The cold, snowy campus offered the perfect place for a bookish girl with a passion for research to blossom. Angela's parents impressed upon her the need for a reliable career, so after college, she went on to Washington University in St. Louis where she earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching. Teaching at small, private schools, she applied her love of art and music, history and travel in her classroom.

Along the way she adhered to her mantra: just GO! She won a Fulbright Memorial Fund award and spent a month in Japan studying the Japanese educational system. Not long after Angela's husband asked, "What would you think about moving to California?" And away they went. She has taught writing in Korea as well as in cyberspace. She has marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, escorted a variety of performing groups through the US and Europe, and jumps on a plane any time she can.

Angela married an Italian-American with memories of playing as a child at Ostia Antica and romping through the Colosseum. Now she enjoys traveling to Italy several times a year - often escorting small groups of people. In doing so she combines the great passions in her life: art and history, travel and, of course, writing.

However, Angela still does not like broccoli much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brava!, March 25, 2008
This review is from: A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome (ArtPlace series) (Paperback)
In January 2008 a few friends and I had the good fortune to meet Angela (the author) and some members of her delightful family in Italy at Ostia Antica where we learned of the publication of this fine book. I've been to Rome twice in the past year and Angela's book is acccurate, informative--and best of all--interesting. The author's text, photos, and maps combine to make "A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome" a pleasure to read, to carry as a resource while visiting Rome--and in my case a book of memories and treasures and regrets...regrets only in the sense that this book did not exist prior to my visits to Rome. More than just an exposition of Michelangelo and his work, she captures the historical personalities of the period and brings the "rinascita" to life. Like taking a tidy course in Humanities, reading Angela's book will help anyone to become more learned in a pilgrimage to achieve the worthy status of being called "l'uomo universale."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Travel and Art Companion, April 14, 2008
This review is from: A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome (ArtPlace series) (Paperback)
I recently traveled to Rome and Florence with Angela Nickerson, the author of "A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome". The experience was both tremendously enjoyable as well as deeply educational. Ms. Nickerson has filled her book with passion for art, history and the great beauty of Rome through the lens of Michaelangelo's life and artistic triumphs. While visiting Rome is one of the greatest trips you can take, it can be truly enhanced by taking this book along as companion reading. The photos, sidebars, diagrams and insets all serve to make this book a treasure-trove of fun facts and delights to devour while in one of the world's most beautiful cities. Happy travels and happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Michelangelo's Rome, July 21, 2008

This review is from: A Journey into Michelangelo's Rome (ArtPlace series) (Paperback)
This book is informative and very fun to read. I chose it to help prepare me for an upcoming trip to Rome, and, WOW, was it great for that! It gave me an anchor -- Michelangelo's life, art, and times -- to get a great sense of how to approach visiting Rome. It increased my enthusiasm about the trip and really helped me understand and appreciate what I saw.

The author also provides some delightful insights about life in Rome today, such as mentioning the San Giovanni dei Fiorentini church in the heart of historic Rome that welcomes well-behaved cats and dogs to attend services! I not only took the book with me on the trip, but have reread numerous passages since returning.
