Brilliant Brazilian Saxophonist - Not To Be Missed!,
By
This review is from: Jovem Brazilidade (Audio CD)
Caio Mesquita is famous in his country, Brazil, where he has reportedly sold more than half-a-million CDs and DVDs. However he has yet to make an impact outside his native land and I will be very surprised if he does not become an internationally recognised star in years to come.
This boy, born in 1990, is a brilliant and gifted saxophonist who rose to fame on Brazilian television and now has three CDs and a DVD to his credit - all within a couple of years. "Jovem Brazilidade" (New "Brazilianess") is Caio's first album and contains 13 "classics" of Brazilian Popular Music. This album sold 250,000 copies in 2006, when it was released and was the second biggest selling CD in Brazil that year. The two Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions "Wave" and "Garota De Ipanema" will be familiar to many, and "Samba De Verao" (Summer Samba) also found popularity outside Brazil some decades ago. However many melodies here will be unknown to those unacquainted with Brazilian music. Nevertheless one cannot help being transfixed by the passionate and expressive playing of Caio on alto or soprano saxophone as he interprets each number in his own style. He displays a maturity of performance way beyond his years, yet this is a natural talent and one which deserves to gain widespread recognition. If you like Latin jazz or "easy listening" instrumental music, you will enjoy this splendid debut album. If you appreciate the sound of a solo saxophone, you will be greatly impressed by this selection. The accompanying musicians provide appropriate backing of a high order, but Caio holds centre stage.
