5.0 out of 5 stars Wine as an Art
I've been waiting for the DVD release for months since there wasn't a screening in a theater close to me. Let me say, it was well worth the wait! First, the disclaimers: I rated this DVD with 5 stars because I am a fan of Maynard and a huge fan of wine. I enjoy both, and see wonderful art in both. I think if I was strictly a Maynard fan and not one of wine, I still would...

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Boring
This doc is mostly about wine and a bit about puscifer.

I'm not a wine drinker and I dont really like puscifer.

It has a few funny parts, but if you are watching this as a tool fan and hoping for appearances from other Tool members other than Keenan then you will be disappointed. Also, the Tool fans that they chose to show in the doc seem like...

I think if I was strictly a Maynard fan and not one of wine, I still would have enjoyed the film. Conversely, if I was only a fan of wine and not or Maynard, or didn't even know who he was, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much. The wine 'education' was brief and not complex at all. If you've got a reasonable knowledge of winemaking I doubt you'll learn anything new - other than the development of the Arizona wineries.

All that said, if you know of Maynard you know he's an incredible and dark artist, elusive and deep. When participating in his music, the listener catches a glimpse of his soul. He conveys this same emotion while learning about his involvement in the other art of making wine. Though very much a science (most of the local winemakers I know have a background in chemistry), the success of a wine lies in the art. It evokes emotion if it's a good one. It's forgettable if it's mediocre. Just like music. This film does a fantastic job of showing the similarities of music and wine and the deep appreciation of both that Maynard has. He definitely came out of his comfort zone to make this movie, and I think fans of his (and wine for that matter) are lucky that he did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wine/Music Documentary!, August 19, 2010
This review is from: Blood into Wine (DVD)
Maynard really stepped out of his comfort zone to make this movie! I saw it during the premiers and it was great. They give enough information about wine to keep it interesting and it was really funny too. I recommend this for all levels of wine drinkers as well as Tool/Perfect Circle/Puscifer fans. Mila Jovovich rocks in here too! She's got a great, interesting voice!

Love me some Maynard, loved this video. Even if you don't appreciate tool, you can appreciate what goes into the wine making process through this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of course it is for the Maynard fan!, December 14, 2011
This review is from: Blood into Wine (DVD)
There is great imagery throughout the video. I am about to marry an amazing girl who never liked Tool or understood my fascination for this man named Maynard. Once she saw the video, she understood more about my affinity for the music that came from this driven individual. Maynard seems to embrace reality in all of its struggles and he teaches through his art how to accept challenges and embrace the random with a driven passion. In this documentary, he comments on the struggles endured making wine and how he expects more to come. He is very realistic and true to his passion for wine regardless of skeptics. Maynard has connected the first few dots for us as we venture into wine tasting as a hobby.

I work in the wine industry, that could be why I enjoyed it as much as I did. I am also a huge MJK fan, maybe THAT's why I enjoyed it as much as I did. Either way, I enjoyed this movie/documentary at all levels. The documentation was very well done with lots of humor and the naked truth about being a winemaker. On the front cover there is a media blurb that calls Blood into Wine "the rock and roll version of sideways", I assure you it is NOT! Blood into Wine is tastefully done and is about the passion of wine and wine-making. "Sidways" is not about that at all. I love the way this documentary revealed Maynard Keenan as a deeply passionate, intelligent man who has reason and is conscious of everything he does. Eric Glomski is also a brilliant viticulturist and winemaker. Milla Jovovich is adorable and adds spice, humor and talent to the movie as well. Definitely one of my all time favorite movie /documentaries. I own it and have given it out as gifts...It's that good.

This is a perfect, witty, tiny peak into the blood sweat and tears that have gone into growing vineyards in Arizona. It is hard not to be captured by the emotions and feel the passion Eric and MJK have for this labor of love and the artistry that goes into developing their amazing wines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly funny and awesome., December 4, 2010
This review is from: Blood into Wine (DVD)
I'll start by saying I'm a huge fan of Tool and Maynard, and not really into wine just because I haven't had the time to really get into it yet, but I do like drinking in general.

I started to watch the movie thinking I'd only watch it for a 10 minutes or so since it was late, but I ended up watching the whole thing, it had me entranced.

The movie is hilarious, with guest appearances by Patton Oswalt, and Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim from the Tim and Eric Awesome Show and Milla Jovovich, very entertaining.

The movie is kind of sparse on actual wine making, but does give a pretty good idea of the growing climate and difficulties involved in the arid dry land of Arizona.

Very cool and gives a good insight into the man, the myth, the legend of Maynard James Keenan.

if you believe in maynard james keenan, and if you believe in the vision that he's shared with his wine producing partner eric glomski, then this documentary is for you. furthermore, if you believe in TOOL, a perfect circle, or puscifer, then this documentary is for you. blood into wine shows maynard as human as the rest of us, yet shows glimpses of his humility, and his humour. a truly gifted and spirited individual. and then there's eric glomski and his views on senses!!! wow!!! pure honest raw, rare. an insight into an honest pursuit of oneself.
