Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Events have overtaken this short history of ballooning, which ends with Steve Fossett's failed 1998 attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones's successful attempt in Breitling Orbiter 3 may have sparked interest in the sport, though, and Denniston's book is the perfect introduction for the curious. Denniston, a doctor, pilot, and contributing editor to Balloon Life magazine, starts with a short history of ballooning, from the Montgolfier brothers to Ed Yost's creation of the modern hot-air balloon. This is followed by chapters on topics including the physics of balloon flight, balloons in special shapes, balloon competitions, extreme-sport ballooning, goodwill and charity activities, balloon festivals, and a day in the life of a typical commercial balloon pilot. Recommended for libraries in communities that host balloon festivals and where interest in the subject is high. [Over 100 full-color photographs not seen.]ATerry Jo Madden, Boise State Univ. Lib., I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from the Everett Herald, April 26, 1999

Ballooning Book Takes Readers up, up and away!

Maybe it was the photograph of the cow jumping over the moon; or several balloons cheek-by-jowl, jockeying for position during competition.

Somewhere in George Denniston's "The Joy of Ballooning" (Courage Books) it became clear that thrills, cameraderie, humor, creativity and competition are all part of the ballooning experience.

Imagine floating over the Snohomish Valley, or trying to be the first to float three miles to snag the keys of a pickup that are attached to a 30-foot-high pole, or taking your wedding vows in a sky-high ceremony.

Denniston offers an overview of ballooning, from history and physics to extreme ballooning, special shapes and festivals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review from magazine, Ballooning, September 18, 1999

With a cover this beautiful, and a writer this experienced, it would be hard to miss. George Denniston has been flying and writing about balloons for years, and brings all his experience and knowledge to this work. The text follows a predictable pattern, including ancient and recent history, technical aspects, festivals, shapes, instruction and so forth. Denniston, however, brings a new and different twist to each chapter, making sure the text includes tidbits of information not often seen in books of this type. The graphic layout, including the typography, is nothing short of magnificent. Corinda Cook deserves heaps of awards for her efforts. The photography comes from some of the best in the field - Ron Behrmann, Trish Behrmann, Kathleen Andersen, Ben Blass, and others. Their work has appeared frequently on the pages of this publication, as well as ballooning and non-ballooning texts the world over........

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! Gorgeous!, January 16, 2005

The photos in this book are worth the price alone. The centerfold of a bunch of balloons in flight is just breathtaking. I'm actually going to use it to paint a mural in my house! If you have a balloonist in your life, or are just very interested yourself, this book is a must-have. I bought it for a child who just loves to sit and look at all the pictures and now, at the age of 3, loves to know all about how they work, etc. It's very educational and interesting to read and very well written too, I might add.

Be sure to grab this book - it's just beautiful and very, very interesting and informative. Besides, your kids will love it!
