Unfortunately, my copy of this cd is locked in a storage unit on the other side of the country, but I remember this being my favorite album by them. So much so that I'm thinking of buying it again!

Edit: Bought it and it's as great as I remembered!

5.0 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS IS A DEFINATE FROM LINCOLN, NE, November 26, 1999

The Omaha music scene is not alive unless Carolyn's Mama is in town. The album JOY is at the top of my ALL time CD purchases. Every song on the album is a hit. If you make the mistake of beginning the CD on track one, you have better be prepared to have the next hour free, because you won't be able to turn it off. The band is a must see live, Rhett Lee is the most captivating performer I have ever seen live. Hats off to an incredible ablum.

Joy is a must have compact disc in anyone's collection. If you've only heard them on the radio or cd you must see them live and feel the energy that they bring to the stage every show.

5.0 out of 5 stars We all could use a little more "Joy" in our lives!!! :), June 15, 1999

This review is from: Joy (Audio CD)
"Joy" is the most polished and radio-ready effort by CM to date. I also have their first two CDs ("Fridays and Other Small Tragedies" and "Thirty Pieces or Silver"); each album is more mature lyrically and tighter musically than the last. Just beware that no recording can capture the intensity of the band's live shows, which have a devoted following from Denver to Chicago. In an age of studio gimmicks, when most modern rock bands sound great on CD but are exposed live, Carolyn's Mother is a refreshing change.

The first single from "Joy" is "Back Porch," with CM's trademark ringing guitars and a chorus that sticks in your head: "Ohh...you can't save the world...the world is gonna find you out."

Want to hear a live show favorite? "Sleeping With the Enemy" is a self-critical jab at the music/celebrity industry ("Politics, I could never sing about it...lipstick, I could not be sold you bought it...you want the world to follow you like Jesus Christ").

And who ever said music that rocks has to have a negative message? Check out the title track "Joy" for a dose of optimism.

With 12 tracks that range from introspective and soulful ("Home") to unabashed head-bangin' rock ("Day to Day"), Carolyn's Mother and "Joy" have something for everyone yet still stand out in an overcrowded modern rock genre.
