About the Author

Irma Rombauer self-published the first Joy of Cooking in 1931 with the small insurance payout she received after her husband committed suicide during the Great Depression. Suddenly, society wives who used to enjoy a kitchen staff no longer had the money to employ them and began cooking for themselves. The instruction "stand facing the stove" was a bit more pragmatic than we realize. In 1936, the first commercial edition was published by Bobbs-Merrill. Marion Rombauer Becker, Irma's daughter, joined the Joy dynasty and revised and updated each subsequent edition until 1975. That edition was the first after Irma's death and was completely Marion's. Her son, Ethan Becker, has returned the book to the family's voice, revising the 1975 edition for the 75th Anniversary Edition.

Ethan Becker is the son of Marion Rombauer Becker and the grandson of Irma S. Rombauer, the original author of The Joy of Cooking. He attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, but learned how to cook from his mom. An outdoors-man, he is a master of the grill and at cooking game. His outdoor gear and survival and combat knives are sold internationally under the brand Becker Knife and Tool. Ethan and his wife, Susan, a writer, editor, and artist, live in East Tennessee at their home, Half Moon Ridge. His website is www.thejoykitchen.com.

This book has the nicest page layout of photographs and recipes I've seen in a long time. It has recipes for simple things like different kinds of hot cocoa to cinnamon rolls, oatmeal, and tarts. The picture of the apple walnut muffins makes me salivate! This would make a great gift.

If you are a beginner to preparing breakfast's and brunches for guests, I highly recommend this book. I recommend it anyhow, for yourself. your family,etc... The recipes are simple with easy to follow instructions and they come out great. No need to tailor them, unless you have specific desires (like cheese, or pepper or whatever else you may want) but that is easily done. These recipes compliment any breakfast, brunch, or lunch. It hosts a nice array of warm drinks, mixed drinks(cocktails and mocktail (non-alchoholic versions) info. for you little ones), there are pancakes, crepes, blintzes galore, a nice section on fruit and fruit glazes like compote, jelly, a small variety of meats and so forth. As a place to start, this is it. Enjoy.

We purchased this book to get ideas for our Bed and Breakfast -- The Sunflowers by the Sea. Not only was it filled with wonderful breakfast recipes but also valuable tips and techniques.

The book was so good we bought a second copy to keep at our winter home!

Just reading this book changed my success in the kitchen. Classically, Breakfast was the only meal I could handle; now, I feel like an expert. Covers lots of tips and tricks on making things better, that you alrealy make well. Also, the recipe's are delicious.

Good variety of recipes. Easy to follow instructions. While the ingredients are put in the step by step format instead of listed at the beginning, they are in bold print so are easy to find so you can check your pantry or make a grocery list. I highly recommend this book for cooks of any level.
