There are certain things that only certain people can do. David Phelps is one of those people. He is a once in lifetime singer. I am being over dramatic, maybe. But, I have heard many vocalists who can deliver a great message, I have heard vocalists who can sing the song better than the composer intended, and I have heard vocalists just open their mouth and deliver a sweet and powrful sound. Yet, I have never, and I mean never heard someone do all of those things and do them this well and at times seeming do effortless. enough about the singer.
The Album is a great package of new, old, and traditional. O, Holy Night - noone does it better. Joy, Joy - great haunting verse to set-up the beautiful chorus. I could go on and on about each track. But as a whole, it is great. The combo of this steller horn group and a vocalist to me seemed scary, but in truth, the horns make the CD even better. I have heard bits of his new Chritmas CD, but this one is a classic, that gets listened to even when there isn't snow on the ground.

Great Christmas CD!! The second song, O Holy Night, is something to behold in terms of breath control, power, softness, and then at the end ALL VOCAL PIPES FIRING!!! This is how O Holy Night should be sung - with reverence and confidence! The Millar Brass Ensemble does a phenomenal job making these compositions fresh, intricate, and exciting, while retaining the signature melodies we've all come to know and expect from these hymns.

Of note, track #9 (I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day) is a beauty. Listen for David's exceptional breath control at the end of the song when he sings the final words: "to man". He decides to use a good portion of his vocal strength and breath to emphasize the word "to". And yet he finds a way, without taking a new breath, to role into a very difficult, breath-robbing word "man" for 14 more seconds until the song ends. He does it mellow, clearly and gently, without strain. I think it's just David's way of letting his listeners know that he likes to push the envelope and sing certain parts of a songs in ways that shouldn't even be vocally possible.

Lastly, on Birthday Of The King, track #10. After the Hark the Herald interlude concludes, David literally transforms into an unrelentingly powerful fortissimo of singing that is carried through to the end of the song. The ending, of course, is a long-sustained HIGH note that shoots off like a laser until his mighty operatic vibrato kicks in fully! It's one of those goose bump endings that fills your body with joy, your mind with disbelief, and your heart with contentment because you know that there still exists a handful of supremely talented singers, like David, who can evoke the deepest of emotions in us.

I bought this CD a year or so ago, and it quickly became my favorite Christmas CD. It truly is celebratory, joyous, and more traditional sounding than the pop singers singing less than reverent Christmas tunes.
David Phelps has a beautiful voice, and the brass and uplifting lyrics make this a must have in your Christmas collection.

I've had this CD for several years, and it always makes the holiday season more special for me. It's got mostly traditional songs, with a few newer compositions (the title cut is terrific), and an over-the-top vocal styling that would sound out of place any other time of the year but is exactly what you want from Christmas music. Phelps works this material with, well, joy -- and that's what makes this album such a treat.

I LOVE David Phelps. His music and voice can transport me to the foot of the cross. He is without a doubt one of my all time favorite artists. I recommend all of his albums and if you get a chance to see him live - it's an experience you won't forget or regret.
