Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This volume, from a contributor to The Joy of Photography (2000), is glossy enough to be a coffee-table book yet packed with information useful for anyone interested in digital photography, from parents who simply want to e-mail photos of their new babies to aspiring photographic artists. Technology and artistry are both addressed: clear explanations of pixels, jpeg and tiff formats, types of digital cameras, and how to use a camera together with a personal computer, among other topics, are nicely balanced with suggestions for composing attractive shots, enhancing images, and adding special effects. Numerous clear, bright full-color photos provide attractive examples of techniques and results discussed in the text, which is suitable for beginners yet detailed enough for those more familiar with technology, photography, or both. Unfortunately, black-and-white photography is given short shrift here, except for a brief section on retouching old photos that have been scanned. A glossary, index, and list of Web sites round out this complete, well-designed guide. Diane Foote

More About the Author

www.jeffwignall.com

I am a photographer and writer and the author of many photography books and I'm lucky enough to have more than a million books in print. Probably the best known of the books I've written are the Joy of Photography and the Joy of Digital Photography. There is little that I love more than to travel and take pictures and I love to teach photography through my books. My father was a photographer and so I grew up in a house filled with cameras and books filled with great photography--it probably would have been difficult to not become a photographer. I credit my grammar school teachers with teaching me how to write a clear sentence and my high school typing teacher with giving me one of the greatest skills a writer can have: fast fingers. I live in Connecticut and, in winter, often work in a basement laboratory trying to find a solution to Global Colding.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last -- digital photography made fun and easy!, November 18, 2004
This review is from: The Joy of Digital Photography (A Lark Photography Book) (Hardcover)
Rarely do the mastery of an art and the mastery of teaching that art fall to the same person, but Jeff Wignall seems to be the exception that proves the rule. This how-to book lives up to its title - the passionate enthusiasm Wignall obviously feels for his subject matter is joyous and contagious. This book is a well-written comprehensive manual on how to grasp every element of digital photography as well as many elements of classical photography. From beginning theory to advanced technique and insider secrets from the pros, Wignall lays it out in a step-by-step manner. His voice resonates with originality and expertise. Most photos in the book are his and some are quite stunning - the book is fun to leaf through purely for the visuals. Wignall writes super-clearly, with wit, character and humor. He de-mystifies technical details that could easily intimidate amateurs like myself. It's evident that a ton of love, thought and research went into this work and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in digital photography or even just photography in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, February 8, 2006
This review is from: The Joy of Digital Photography (A Lark Photography Book) (Hardcover)
This is a really good book!!~ I'm 15 and just got it for my birthday. It is easy to read and gives alot of info that I never knew about taking pictures. Now, all my pictures are coming out way better then they used to.The only thing I suggest is having you digital cameras' manual with you when reading most of the book; it's helpful to try out certain things on your camera while reading the " Joy of.." book. A great book...big, beatiful pictures, and lots of info!

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat! Full of info, fun, and great advice., September 30, 2004

This is a fantastic book. I bought it because its predessor, The Joy of Photography helped me learn to use my first 35mm camera. Now I have been struggling to master pixels and downloads and I am pleased to say that Jeff Wignall has come through again! This book is so much fun, inspiring and filled with gorgeous photography. There's great information, not only on the technical bits but on taking wonderful pictures. The presentation is beautiful and there's cool things like a digital timeline. This is the best photo guide I have ever owned!
