Now, don't get me wrong, I love Combichrist and enjoy Andy's newer stuff, but I really wish I could hear more of this sound. Raw, gritty powernoize that has a deep level of darkness and emotion without the need for lyrics. While not as danceable as his newer material, the Joy of Gunz album delivers the commanding auditory presence that lies at the heart of industrial. For the future of Combichrist, it'd be nice if a balance could be found between power like this and modern dance beats. All in all, an amazing album and one I would recommend (if not require!) be added to the collections of Combichrist fans and fans of industrial music in general!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only remotely palatable offering from Combichrist, November 21, 2008

If you think Combichrist would be awesome if Andy just decided to stop singing and really kicked up the distortion, and maybe threw away that same synth that you hear in every dark club act these days, then by god this is the album for you. This is by far the harshest and most involved work he's made, and when it shines, it shines with an aura of violence and contempt thats all its own. Standout tracks include "Joy of the World," which features samples of Charles Manson (which are probably familiar to you by now); "Winteryear," which is a decimated romp through a cold soundscape of crushing ice and avalanches; the melodic and aptly-named "Turmoil;" the ultra-angry, ultra-stompy "Vater Unser;" and the strangely calm outro track, "Shrunken Heads for All Occasions." Of course, he has to include some tracks with shocking titles, like "You Will Be the B***h Now" and "Bulletf**k," but while decent songs they are far from the notable tracks. In fact, just having 4 or 5 good songs makes it better than Combichrist's other two albums (and all the EPs) combined. The downplayed vocals are definitely a plus, although they are used to some good effect on "Play Dead" and "Vater Unser" -- but here, his vocals are usually ultra-distorted and thrown into the mix with the other instruments rather than coming out as the centerpiece. In all, this is radically less cliched and embarrassing as his later releases, and worth a listen even to rhythmic noise fans (if for no other reason than to have something "danceable" laying around for friends that isn't completely atrocious).
