1.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book!!!, April 16, 2007
This review is from: The Joy of Horses : A Beginner's Guide to Safe and Responsible Horsemanship (Paperback)
Do not buy this book!!!
It teaches you how to be cruel to your horse!!!
whoever wrote it should NOT be allowed to have horses!!!

Is this what you should do to a horse:
1-boot the horse in the belly...Get a lawn rake (the kind with flexible tines) and place it within grabbing distance. When your horse kicks, grab that rake and beat and rake the tine end on the horses rump and side in a wild manner.
2-yell fiercely at it and kick it hard with your heels or grind your spurs into its sides...If your horse did not respond to your verbal ferocity and kick, use a short whip such as a riding cropto bat the horse across the rump
3-"The best way to reprimand a rearer is to yell at it sharply, boot it in the ribs, and whack it on the rump"

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is easy to read, complete and informative., June 1, 1998

This review is from: The Joy of Horses : A Beginner's Guide to Safe and Responsible Horsemanship (Paperback)
Before buying my 15 year old daughter a horse,I started looking for a book on horse care that was easy to read and informative. This book had everything I had been looking for and more! Shortly after getting our 1 year old filly home we noticed she had a habit of pawing when she didn't get her way. I looked up pawing in the index went to the page and found exactly what I was looking for.I did exactly as suggested and this morning while grooming she behaved and we had a great time together. The glossary is also an added pleasure. I would and have recomended this book to other horse owners and horse lovers. It's a definate must have for beginners and seasoned horse lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beginning, March 19, 2001

I have T/B racehorse, retired, and have used Joy's book often when problems arise. She's only 9, but I bought her and then tracked down 8 prior owners and now have had her for almost 3 years. Patience is a virtue for an untrusting horse. She's become my best friend and there's no pricetag on this horse. After 20 years of wanting a horse and being a beginner, Joy's book has been most helpful. Thanks
