5.0 out of 5 stars Great sock book!
I own just about every sock knitting book ever written. I had to review this one because I like it so much! It has great sock patterns, a lot of patterns (32), beautiful photographs, and a spiral binding. What makes it unique is that it has little narratives and fun statistics sprinkled throughout that make it a sock book that you can actually read. The "Joy of Sox"...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cutiesy pictures, but not enough detail
I purchased this book and returned it because I couldn't see any detail in the pictures. I know these are probably great patterns, but if i can't see the stitches to "read" them as i knit, I can't see if my work looks like the picture of the pattern. The publisher was too concerned about the couples in the pictures and forgot that it was a sock book! I compared the photos...

The "Joy of Sox" double entendres in the book are kind of cute too! This is now one of my favorite sock books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best collection of sock patterns!, October 16, 2009

If you could only get one sock book, this is the one! I knew I wanted this book when all the new sock patterns I had clicked on Ravelry were from this book. Nearly every pattern is something I want to knit. And I love how there are multiple views of each sock pattern on real feet, so you know how they will look.

If you love knitting socks you will love this book. So many fun patterns that are so inspiring. Really gets your motivation moving! The patterns appear to be well written and easy to follow and the photography is excellent. Just a very pleasing and inviting book. Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars missing abreviations, February 14, 2010

This review is from: The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs (Hardcover-spiral)
I really like this book and I am on my second pattern already.I started with "Rock-A-Bye" page 39 and was perplexed to see that the patterns for the left and right "foot" portion of the pattern are very different and do not end up looking the same.I then knit "Afternoon Delight" on page 103 and was disconcerted to find that the abbreviation in the lace pattern - sk2pB - is not in the list of abbreviations in the front of the book, neither is k1B. I am an experienced knitter so this is not such a problem for myself but for others it may be a concern. I have tried to find erato for this publication but have not been successful. Hopefully the other patterns are OK.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, January 26, 2010

I love owning this book. It is inspiring. Every sock is just lovely. I go through the whole book to just focus on yarns used. Then again to focus on techniques. Then again to focus on tips. Then again to note the designers of my favorite socks. Then the next time I pick up the book I have completely different favorites. To be honest, I love all of these socks so much, I haven't committed to cast on yet. Help me. Please.

I really like this book. I have many sock books but often the instructions are hard to follow. In this book the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Many patterns and a good selection for beginners and experienced. Patterns are also different and creativeThe Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs. The layout of the book is bright and not crowded with a million things. I found the tips very interesting. 4 paws up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Knit These Sox By the Fireplace with your Special Someone, January 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs (Hardcover-spiral)
First off, I love the title of this book and its subtle take-off on the book with a similar title. (Notice the couple in bed with the woman knitting!) There are socks entitled 'A Roll in the Hay', 'Breakfast in Bed', and 'Quickie Socks'. There's even a subtitle in the first chapter, called 'Does Size Matter?' I think we all get the humor and appreciate it. Now, what about the book as a resource for knitting socks?

I found the patterns interesting and fun. There are several projects that I'd like to knit. I think the book is best for those who have some experience with sock knitting as there are not illustrations about the basics. Basics are essential in getting started and I'd only recommend this book for someone who has knit at least one pair of socks previously.

There is a wide choice of patterns - cables, fair isle, lace, short socks, above the knee socks. I think there's a pattern in this book for everyone. So.....pick up your sock yarn and needles and go for it. It's a charmer of a book - - and a nice way to spend an evening by the fireplace with that special someone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cutiesy pictures, but not enough detail, March 22, 2010
This review is from: The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs (Hardcover-spiral)
I purchased this book and returned it because I couldn't see any detail in the pictures. I know these are probably great patterns, but if i can't see the stitches to "read" them as i knit, I can't see if my work looks like the picture of the pattern. The publisher was too concerned about the couples in the pictures and forgot that it was a sock book! I compared the photos to other books I have purchased - much closer pictures in those books. I can see if it is a pattern I want to try. I can read a pattern but cannot visualize what it looks like before stitching it. I would probably repurchase if a new edition had more detailed pictures added.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book, but different sizes for ALL patterns would be nice, January 21, 2011
This review is from: The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs (Hardcover-spiral)
This is one of the few knitting books I actually own. I got this so I could learn to knit socks and have some cool patterns to choose from. I love the funky patterns and I plan to knit most of the designs now that I've proven to myself I can knit a sock. They are all intermediate/experienced patterns and most of them are based of charts so if you haven't used charts before (like me) it was a learning experience. I also had to improve my cabling skills and learn a few more abbreviations as I went. There is a lot of variety in the patterns, some color work, some beading, some solid colors with cable patterns, etc.

The other thing that is nice about this book is that I've knit up a few things now and haven't found massive errors like I have in other books. Some have an errata sheet for almost every pattern it seems! The instructions have been really clear and there are directions for different cast-ons and techniques at the beginning. I think there was one error in the toe of one pattern, but it was a really simple correction and I just made the toe like I would make any other toes up sock and it was fine.

The downside: I'm not a good enough knitter to alter patterns yet. There are some socks in here with feet that are over 9" around and my feet just aren't that big. One of the pairs of socks has a huge colorwork pattern on it too, so I REALLY have no idea how to alter it. It would have been nice if ALL the patterns had modifications for different food diameters instead of just some.

5.0 out of 5 stars The joy of a superb knitting book, January 16, 2011
This review is from: The Joy of Sox: 30+ must-knit designs (Hardcover-spiral)
I own dozens of knitting books - most of which have only a couple of patterns I like. Not only do I find most of the patterns in this book to be beautifully made and the patterns well written, but the book is actually readable too! It is not often that I sit down and actually "read" a knitting book. This book, however, has several instructional sections and tips sprinkled throughout the book and also has informative reference information - not too much but enough to help you through sizing issues, lesser-known cast-on techniques, and information on how to read different patterns to fit your knitting style (one circular, two circulars, DPNs). I would highly recommend this book to any other sock knitter as the patterns range from simple to highly complex and utilize a number of different types of yarns and stitch techniques. Here you will find patterns you can use for handpainted or solid yarns, knee socks to anklets, colorwork, lace, cables, whatever you like! Buy it and enjoy! This is one knitting book you will actually read and use many of the patterns as well.
