5.0 out of 5 stars Forget Obama; Aya De Leon for President, February 28, 2008

This review is from: Joy in the Struggle (Audio CD)
You do not listen to an Aya De Leon CD; you experience it. Energy, energy, energy - she explodes. Her poems/performances are about all of us - male, female, black, white, straight, gay (full disclosure: I'm of the male/white/straight persuasion). She gives voice to those who are afraid to speak, who have given up, who feel powerless, marginalized.
I teach a college course relating poetry to peace and social justice issues, and my students always respond most enthusiastically to Aya's works. They become more willing to discuss and explore the serious issues of their lives. She forces dark issues into light. If you're thinking you might be buying a CD of staid and stiff poetry readings, you're not. No, you most assuredly are not. Fasten your seat belt, open your ears, and open your mind. Or let Aya open it for you.
Aya for President? Far-fetched? Of course. We'll see a woman or a black man in the White House before we see the likes of the Aya De Leons running our country. Thi-i-i-ink about it. And while you're thinking, drop by Aya'a website and pick up both of her CDs. Fine print: side effects include headache, nausea, dizziness and diarrhea for extreme right wing xenophobes, homophobes, liberal-o-phobes, phobe-o-phobes and anyone-who's-different-from-me-o-phobes.
