Book Description

January 7, 2003

What happened to The Joy of Success? In these hectic, demanding times we simply don't have time to do what doesn't matter. But most people spend hours each day doing things that don't. Well-intentioned but lacking all 10 Success Skills, they work longer and harder with more stress and less satisfaction but fewer dreams realized. And they teach their children to do the same.

"What makes some individuals and teams more successful than others? Are there actually Success Skills and, if so, how can they be learned and taught?" These questions kept Susan Ford Collins awake at night as a young researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health. Finally she stood up in one of their high-powered conferences and proposed studying healthy, successful people as well as ill ones. Her colleagues all laughed, but red-faced she vowed to spend the rest of her life doing just that. And she has.

For the next 15 years, Susan shadowed outstanding people from all walks of life and was able to discover 10 skills they were using consistently but unconsciously. Since then she has taught these skills in major corporations and educational institutions. Knowing these individuals and teams were using her skills to create successes they wanted, and lives they enjoyed, inspired Susan to write The Joy of Success.

In this must-read guide to personal satisfaction and fulfillment, renowned business consultant and motivational speaker Susan Ford Collins shows individuals in any field how to achieve success in their lives. In The Joy of Success she outlines each skill and provides easy-to-learn methods for immediately putting them to use. Throughout, she includes powerful examples, stories and suggestions. Whether readers are changing jobs or relationships, starting or managing companies, families or dreams, these 10 skills will guide them step by step not just to the successes other people want for them, but to the successes they want for themselves. To the completion of their own projects and dreams.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Collins, who has spent the past 20 years studying highly successful people and sharing their secrets through her "Technology of Success" seminars, extends her franchise with this book. Weaving together metaphysics, physics, philosophy and psychology, she presents an in-depth examination of 10 skills that highly successful people employ. With the premise that success is not a goal but a state of being "satisfied and fulfilled by what you choose to do and be on a daily basis," Collins shows readers how to "manage the process day by day, step by step," beginning with instructions on ways to define, manage and acknowledge success. Insisting that "we are the creators of our lives," she presents the tools that she says will help readers realize their dreams. Although all this talk of following one’s ambitions and desires may sound stale, Collins does delineate some key characteristics of successful folk: they communicate powerfully, have a clear idea of what they want to achieve and aren’t afraid to step out on a limb. And while some readers may question Collins’s anecdotal evidence and free-range logic and beliefs, she does deliver well-defined and practical tips for both personal and professional success.

From Booklist

While Collins was studying the mentally ill at the National Institutes of Mental Health, she kept wondering why scientists don't study healthy, successful people and learn from them as well. Strangely, when she asked successful people what made them succeed, they were usually unable to find an answer. It was only through observing them at work and in their daily lives that she was able to define 10 skills they were applying unconsciously. In "Skill 1" we learn that success doesn't just mean accomplishing a goal; it also means sometimes saying no to free up time to enjoy life. "Skill 2" involves shifting gears from initial interest (first gear) to doing something better and faster (second gear) to working smarter and realizing your dreams (third gear). These concepts form the basis for the "Skills" that follow as Collins takes a Zen approach, where the journey becomes more relevant than the destination. Although the narrative morphs into something more esoteric than practical, the stories prevent it from falling apart. David Siegfried

This review is from: The Joy of Success: 10 Essential Skills for Getting the Success You Want (Hardcover)
After reading this book I realized I`d missed something... 45 years of leading a HEALTHY successful life! After 25 years climbing the corporate ladder on Wall Street I had lost my health, my family and career. And I consider myself lucky... I saw co-workers lose their lives.

I was so inspired by this book that I donated $1,000 worth of copies to my alma mater so future graduates will have a head start. This book should be in every public school curriculum and on every college Freshman Reading List!

I wish my parents and teachers had taught me what I learned from Susan Ford Collins in one week!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound Business Principles!, February 5, 2004

The Joy of Success stands with some of the all time great how-to books, even better, because it follows people before, during and after they become successful...and as we all know success means many different things to many different people.

The author touches on the reality of business and life...show me how you are in your personal life, and this will show how you are in business. What you reflect is what you attract in life.

Holograming or vision is how we set simple and/or complex goals in life. I live these principles on a daily basis. It is how I was able to find my life partner and build my businesses.

New age mumbo jumbo this is not! It is practical every day good advice. Let's face it...to accomplish what we want in life one must set forth a clear and concise plan and live it and breathe it every day.
