Book Description

October 31, 2000
Many people are dissatisfied with their work, and the reasons are many and varied. Joy at Work presents work as a system composed of many interdependent components. The components of the system of work can be broadly separated into two categories: those components relating to the individual and those relating to the organization. Individual work factors include how a career choice is made, self-esteem, and ethics. Organizational factors include the philosophy of management used, performance appraisals, teamwork, and leadership. Once all the factors that affect a person’s enjoyment at work are identified, there is a basis for exploring which factors lead to satisfaction or dissatisfaction for an individual.

Joy at Work also includes a chapter on the spiritual and service aspects of work.

Solid suggestions are offered for both the employee and the employer alike on how to make work more enjoyable, while also increasing the effectiveness of an organization.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic and thoughtful--research-based, August 30, 2001
By

This review is from: Joy at Work (Hardcover)
You thought you had enough problems just trying to find a job. But what about the right job? They say that over 80% of all US workers are unhappy at work--dissatisfied or stressed out. That's so sad when so much of our time is spent at our jobs. "Joy at Work" is not one of those feel good, you can do it, just "follow your bliss" kind of books. It is a thoughtful work covering some of the major research that has been done on the topic of work satisfaction from both the employees and employers point-of-view - from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's "flow theory (people are happy when they are totally involved in a task), to work-life balance issues (all work and no play make Jack a dull boy) and Dr. W. Edwards Deming's "Fourteen Points of Management" (For example: "Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement.")
The book is filled with practical ideas and suggestions such as: if a person's work and personal life is out of balance, one idea they might consider is reducing their overtime hours which may actually increase their output!
This is a book filled with "content," not soft in any way. This is the first time I've written a review, but I feel strongly about this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joy at Work, July 5, 2001
This review is from: Joy at Work (Hardcover)
Joy at Work by Jim Weihrouch is a comprehensive and well written book that consolidates and synthesizes the multiple work considerations from the aspects of the employer and those seeking work. It is filled with practical ideas and suggestions along with a wealth of information from a wide variety of other professional writers. One of its greatest strengths is its spiritual base which, in my opinion, is a basic ingredient necessary to keep work from being mechanical and to bring "Joy" to that work for which each person has an above average passion and the skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the Joy at Work I was expecting, August 27, 2005
By
Nancy Nelson (Campbell, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I thought this book was a little "light" in terms of content. I actually was looking for another book entitled Joy at Work which is a national bestseller. While I can't argue with the content (basically all common sense) it was nothing I didn't already know. This seems to be the case with quite a few business books.
