Modern funk without the fromage,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Joya (Audio CD)
If you like classic 70's funk, this album alludes to it all, from Steely Dan, Chicago, and Sly. But it does so with amazing contemporary production quality that gives it a thoroughly modern feel. Usually when this style of music isn't heard on vinyl it sounds too crisp and lacks the dirt that makes funk funky. But this album alludes to the past while having the other foot in the present, with most of the vocals being done with more of an MC style flow. There's tasteful bits of digital beats and noises. Overall a really fun great album that avoids the cheese that so many jazzer/muso modern "jazz" albums have, yet rendered with the same skills.
