5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
I experimented with making sushi this past weekend, and used this set to do so. I used the rice paddle to turn and vinegar the rice, as recommended in "Sushi For Dummies." The mat made rolling the maki rolls a breeze - I was expecting it to be MUCH more difficult than it was. I would recommend that you purchase more than one mat if you are not making sushi alone...

2.0 out of 5 stars Bumpy on both sides, not held together very well - better off going to Chinatown
Sushi rollers are pretty cheap in general, but I was too lazy to go to Chinatown and pick one up so I thought I'd try my luck online. I was surprised that the roller is bumpy on both sides, and the string holding it together is very loose. I've made sushi before on better rollers of the same price, decided to go to chinatown to pick one up instead.

That said...

I experimented with making sushi this past weekend, and used this set to do so. I used the rice paddle to turn and vinegar the rice, as recommended in "Sushi For Dummies." The mat made rolling the maki rolls a breeze - I was expecting it to be MUCH more difficult than it was. I would recommend that you purchase more than one mat if you are not making sushi alone. There were two of us and it would have been more fun (and productive) to each have a rolling mat.
Word of caution though: If you are making sushi for the first time, consult a reference other than the pamphlet included with this set. It is not detailed enough to use for a first sushi attempt!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need, December 23, 2006
This review is from: Joyce Chen Sushi Kit (Kitchen)
I bought this last year for my husband and it is great. We use it quite often. The only problem we've had recently is we can't get the mat clean, but I figure after a year of use it's time to get another one anyhow. The book is simple but it has a sushi rice recipe which is the most important part. I really like it!

I was pleasantly surprised when I received my Sushi Kit. The mat is of good quality. The spoon will work well for making sushi rice and it even comes with a little pamphlet with some basic instructions for making sushi. The pamphlet although small had some great tips and pointers that my other sushi books have failed to mentioned. For the price this is a great deal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Kit, Shipping Method Not So Good, June 21, 2008
This review is from: Joyce Chen Sushi Kit (Kitchen)
The kit is great, for under 5 dollars you cant beat it. The only thing is, when they shipped it, it came in an envleope. So the box was crushed. Shipping was more than the kit,if it it was a gift, I would have been mad because the box was smashed up. Thats why it got 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best product..., February 7, 2009
This review is from: Joyce Chen Sushi Kit (Kitchen)
Man, how many sushi rolls have I made since I bought this kit? TOO MANY TO COUNT! & If I could post the pictures of the end product, you'd agree with me that, this indeed is a SUPER BUY!

The bamboo mat makes rolling the nori encumbered with rice & fillings, easy!

That right there, pays for the kit in & of itself...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, December 28, 2011

I got this for Christmas and was surprises at how great the quality is (compared to the price), the wooden (bamboo) paddle is very sturdy and well constructed, and the Sushi Mat is well tied together and holds up perfectly. The book included gives basic information for rolling sushi, however, the internet or full book with pictures might help me out better since I am new to this.

In the end I am amazed at the quality and strength these items have, and look forward to many years with these items rolling my own sushi!!!

That said it's not unusable, but you need to put a layer of cling wrap on the roller if you don't wanna get sushi rice stuck between the bamboo. Also you won't get very tight rolls, but with a little practice it'll work.

In general I was pretty disappointed, probably will just give this away.

4.0 out of 5 stars I got what I expected, February 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Joyce Chen Sushi Kit (Kitchen)
While the spoon does feel very light, and I think it is just a mater of time before I break it, I expected as much based on price and other reviews. The mat works great, and the instruction book is helpful. With these things I was able to successfully make my sushi so I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this if you need a sushi mat.
