1.0 out of 5 stars Product made from petroleum based substance
I would not recommend this product. I did not know that it was made from mineral oil, which is a petroleum-based oil. While it is likely not going to contaminate my food, I would prefer not to use this product on kitchen woods.

I have oiled a large wood block table with this. A considerable amount of oil was necessary to cover the entire surface. While the...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whats and Whys of Wood and Bamboo Oils, June 2, 2008
This review is from: Joyce Chen Bamboo Wood Oil, 8 Ounces (Kitchen)
So called wood and "bamboo" oils are simply food grade mineral oils. You should use a wood oil in your kitchen instead of vegetable oil because mineral oil does not break down or become rancid. Wood oil gives sheen and water and stain resistance to wood items such as butcher block, cutting boards, pizza peels and wooden salad bowls. You can use wood oil to darken and restore the appearance of faded wooden knife handles or dried out wood cutting boards. This is a must have for any kitchen with wood items. If you buy any sort of wood gift this is a thoughtfull add on which will help your gift to both maintain its beauty and last longer. This product appears to be offered at the best price on Amazon. Add it to your next order.

Snow River Wood Oil is an identical product but at the price of $6.99. The Snow River oil has also been available as a 4 for 3 promotion.

Wood and bamboo oils are much less exotic than one might think. I actually use mineral oil laxative on my wood kitchen items ($2 for 16 oz. at many drug stores) which is the same thing. Clearly the laxative bottle is less than aesthetically pleasing and is embarassing to leave around the kitchen. My wife keeps hiding the bottle in fact. But No it won't have a laxative effect if you use it on your cutting boards or knife handles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes your cutting boards look brand new, September 8, 2009

This review is from: Joyce Chen Bamboo Wood Oil, 8 Ounces (Kitchen)
I ordered this for an old bamboo cutting board that was looking really drab and dried out. This food grade wood oil made it look brand new again. My husband thought I bought a new cutting board. I had to reapply the product after a few days because I use the board a lot and wash it several times a day. I found that when I applied a thick coat and let it sit overnight to absorb, the effect lasted a little longer. Since bamboo is a rather hard wood it may not get absorbed as easily as some softer woods. I also think that if I had used the oil from the beginning it may have helped preserve the wood better. Of course, the board was still completely functional, it just didn't look as nice before using this wood oil.

I bought a new bamboo cutting board since that time and use this product on it a couple times per week to keep it looking nice and new. Before storing the old board that is only used occasionally now, I covered it with this oil and let it sink in. The product doesn't have any odor and a little goes pretty far. The fact that it's food safe is very important to me.

Update 11/5/10 - I did a video review of a knife block before and after using this product to bring out the wood grain. You can see the difference here: Shun 22-Slot Bamboo Knife Storage Block. The video is dated 11/5/10.

I purchased the Bamboo wood oil the same time I bought my bamboo sushi board. It works great and will keep my sushi board looking new for years to come. Easy to apply and use. This 8oz size will last forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wood Oil: Recommended by Manufacturers of Wooden and Bamboo Kitchen Utensils, August 25, 2009

If you are cooking with wood or bamboo utensils, or using bamboo cutting boards, the manufacturer will recommend you treat them prior to using them with a wood oil such as this one (which is really mineral oil if you want to save money and buy a generic brand).

I bought Joyce Chen's Bamboo Wood Oil to use on a beautiful bamboo cutting board, the MIU Bamboo Mini Butcher Board and on my Le Creuset kitchen utensils with bamboo handles.

I applied the bamboo oil using paper towels. It only takes a very small amount. Bamboo is a hard, nonporous wood and very little oil soaked into the cutting board. I gave it a quick wash with soapy water under the kitchen sink and immediately dried it to get rid of excess oil.

I recommend Joyce Chen's Bamboo Wood Oil as it is a high-quality mineral oil at a reasonable price. It will protect my cutting boards from moisture and lengthen their life spans. Treating with wood oil is also recommended in the board's care instructions. Use this product when your wooden utensils are brand new, before you have used them the first time.

Note: Don't use olive oil or other cooking oils on your wooden utensils as they will cause them to go rancid and will ruin them. Use mineral oil or a wood oil brand such as this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A necessary item for bamboo cutting boards, January 28, 2010

I like this oil a lot--low odor, absorbs into wood quickly, and extra wipes off easily. I notice the price has gone up 20% since I bought it so I am going to look for a less expensive option in the future since I am supposed to keep my bamboo boards well "nourished" with this stuff.

This product works well to keep my wooden cutting boards from cracking. It wipes off easily and doesn't leave a taste and is a good value.

This was purchased along with the bamboo pizza peel as a gift for a friend. If you want to keep your peel (or other bamboo items) looking as beautiful as they do new, this is a necessary product.

I used this for my bamboo cutting boards after searching all over at our local retail stores. It is reasonably priced and doesn't leave a greasy coating.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a bottle of mineral oil..., October 19, 2010

This fancy "Bamboo Wood Oil" is nothing more than regular old mineral oil. That's not a bad thing. Mineral oil is the best thing to use on a wooden cutting board or other wood product. If you have a wooden cutting board, and you want to know how to care for it, the answer is: mineral oil!

However, be aware that you're paying a huge premium for a label here. This is the exact same stuff that you can get at a drug store for pennies to the gallon (well, almost). There is absolutely no difference in "quality" or anything else, it's just mineral oil. So paying $8+ for this is paying a lot more.

But with that said, it's $8. And it's $8 that will probably last you about a decade or so. It only takes a few drops to protect your cutting board every few weeks, and there are A LOT of drops of mineral oil in this bottle. The big reason that I bought it and paid the $8 is because it's a convenient size and it has a convenient label. While I hate to say it, it's a lot easier to explain to someone why you have a bottle of "Bamboo Wood Oil" in your kitchen than it is to explain why you have a jug of laxative (the other major, labelled, use of mineral oil).

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great to preserve and replenish wood cutting boards, August 8, 2009

I purchased this oil specifically for a couple of bamboo cutting boards that I purchased. This oil enhances the color of the wood and seals it to protect it from oils and stains, and it soaks right into the wood. After coating my new cutting boards, I decided to bry it on a couple of older and cheaper cutting boards I have. This oil really made a difference in bringing the look of the old boards back to life.

I have read the review that mineral oil would do as well, but I can't help thinking that an oil made specifically for sealing and conditioning wood products would be better in the long run for the wood.
