Product Description

Amazon.com Review

In today's rapidly changing world, using renewable resources makes sense, even in the kitchen. Joyce Chen's burnished bamboo utensils are beautiful and practical. Bamboo, a grass, grows quickly to harvestable size and is considered an environmentally-sound replacement for slow-growing trees. Stronger than wood, the tools in this set won't scratch nonstick surfaces and are so tough they won't swell, split, or absorb moisture like wood can. Moreover, these are dishwasher-safe. The burnished honey color comes not from a stain but from oven-roasting, which caramelizes the bamboo's naturally occurring sugars.

Designed with Asian cooking in mind, but appropriate for other types of cuisine as well, this five-piece bamboo tool set includes a 12-inch mixing spoon, 12-inch slotted spatula, 11-inch tongs, and 13-inch stir-fry spatula, complete with a bamboo canister. All the tools are safe to use on any nonstick surface. Joyce Chen produces an impressive range of burnished bamboo kitchen tools and cutting boards, along with traditional woks and Asian-style cutlery for the dedicated home chef. --Ann Bieri

Product Description

Joyce Chen's slogan "Eastern Cookware for the Western Kitchen," reflects her focus on providing high-quality, versatile tools and products that have Asian flair, but can be used in a western kitchen. This Burnished Bamboo Utensil Set is a perfect example. The set includes a 12" Mixing spoon, 13" Spatula, 12" Slotted Spatula, 11" Tongs and a Bamboo Canister. The perfect addition for any kitchen. Joyce Chen Burnished Bamboo tools are oven-roasted to bring out the beautiful honey color and will not swell, split, or absorb moisture. Bamboo is a grass - not wood - and an abundant renewable resource, so each time you use a bamboo kitchen tool, you may save the life of a beautiful tree. All of Joyce Chen's bamboo tools are hand shaped and finished. Bamboo is stronger than wood, dishwasher safe and will not scratch even your finest cookware. Good cooks everywhere will tell you that the proper accessories can make the difference between a cooking success and disaster. Joyce Chen opened her first restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1958. The restaurant flourished, and in 1973 a larger Cambridge restaurant was opened. Chen also began writing Chinese cookbooks and in the 1970s began hosting a cooking show on public television. She found that the selection and quality of Chinese cookware in America didn't live up to her high standards¿ so she developed her own. Today, Joyce Chen Products come from all over the Pacific Rim to bring the best of Asia to you.

So Useful I Bought Two Sets January 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase
After two plus decades, I finally decided to replace my wood utensils. Though they had served me well, they were now cracked and splintering.

I was considering nylon or silicone utensils to replace them, but about the same time, I had purchased a bamboo cutting board and really loved it. So I checked out bamboo utensils and found these very nice and reasonably priced tools.

First, they are great with all types of cookware, whether traditional or nonstick. And the burnished bamboo surface is very tough. It doesn't mind high heat or the dishwasher.

I also like the bamboo container. It's small enough to place anywhere in the kitchen. I have on set by the stove and another on my prep table.

The only thing I wish it had was a deeper spoon or ladle for serving.

sturdy and good looking February 7, 2009

I bought this bamboo set after considering various silicone alternatives, which are A) a lot more expensive, and B) pretty unattractive. I think when beauty marries function, that's the ideal combo. Super practical, easy on the eyes. Joyce Chen offers a good variety of utensils -- two spatulas, a spoon, tongs -- just what you really need. And these wont scratch your non-stick or your stainless. And perhaps most important, you get the utensils plus the holder (I got mine on sale) for about what you'd pay for one silicon very non-green tool. The whole thing doesn't take up much room, so you can park the holder handily by the stove. I was pleased with the purchase.

Great set for the price January 31, 2008

Most wood spoons are $5 each and this was a nice set for the price.
I have not owned this longer than a few weeks, but so far, I am happy with the set. the tongs are wood of course and seem stiff, I hope that they dont snap when I use them, but they seem well made. The actual container the utensils sit in reminds me of a barrel that wine is aged in, pretty rustic and skinny and simple, and I think nice for a small or simple kitchen. It seems tiny on my counter and I prefer a more substantial container, but even if I toss the container and just keep the utensils, it is a great buy!

These are cheaply made but are also inexpensive. Note, they are not dishwasher safe even though the description says they are. The packaging instructions say to hand wash. Read more
